Looking for a little local knowledge. A family member is looking to move just south of York, Wheldrake seems to tick the boxes ie small village feel, pub, shop etc. Any local knowledge of the area, what is the school catchment like, commute into York, are there nicer villages nearby etc etc. Thanks

I grew up in Wheldrake & lived in a Pub called the Alice Hawthorn ! many moons ago, lovely village with catchment for fulford School reputedly best school in the area.
Traffic into York can be a pain in the arse early am as it bottle necks at fulford, house prices are slightly high & firm I'd say, good access to the A19 heading into York or to Selby & also the A64 to Leeds or Scarbourgh.

Escrick near by is smaller with same School situation, the fulford area is tidy & you can walk into town by the river really nice but prices are higher again depending on what your looking for, riding wise 35 mins from Dalby or a tad more & onto the moors & plenty of riding to be had. Anything else ask away & I'll give you as much info as you need.

Cheers
Mark

Can't comment on South of York but we live West in Boroughbridge. Commuting into York is a pain at anytime by car but trains go in from all over (except Boroughbridge!) We have good schools, good doctors & excellent pubs though. Reasonable travelling to North York Moors & the Dales & right on the A1M. Plenty of open countryside for quick bridleway blasts as well. (or walking)
We love the place.

Traffic can be a nightmare peak times. Agreed re Fulford as best school - catchments. Included in that area is Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe & Heslington which are all easier commute and cyclable, but the house prices are silly.

We moved to Haxby a year ago (Rowntrees School which is fine and relatively new build), busses are cheap and plentiful, 20 mins to station by bus/car +15 peak. Its bigger than a village but feels villagy still. All the villages outside the ring road I've visited are nice, lots of sustrans routes to choose from.

I cycle same distance to the center for work in 25 mins practically all off-road cycle track down the chocolate factory dis-used railway. On sunny mornings I cycle along the Ouse. Next door is up for sale (although optimistically at 50k more than we paid).

Not lived there but we had a holiday rental in Thorganby 2 summers ago. Lovely village, good pub, seemed very nice indeed. The thing that struck me (and continues to strike me) is how much traffic there is. I travel up to York on the train once a week with work and then get a taxi, and even out of rush hour traffic is a nightmare. I definitely be looking for bike or train commutable if you're working in York itself.

Would definatley look into Haxby instead of Wheldrake. Wheldrake is nice enough but seems to be lacking in amenities.
We live in the next village to Haxby (Strensall). Its nice but is lacking in shops, so tend to have to drive to Monks Cross for food (local Costcutter is ok though).
Haxby is great. More like a mini town. Good number of pubs and places to eat. Co-op and a Sainsburys and around 5 coffee shops. Plus that side of York is the best for a road ride into the Howardian Hills or NY moors.

I live in Copmanthorpe.

Decent local school. Catchment for 2/3 decent secondary schools (people choose but a lot of Tadcaster Grammar, some Fulford). Enough shops, dentists, doctors, easy cycle (off road if you want to - slightly longer) into town. Two bus routes into town (one of which is Scarborough - Leeds) plus you can walk to the park&ride in about 25 minutes of needs be. Pub, curry house, curry, Chinese, pizza, kebab takeaways. Fish and chip shop is being renovated. Post office (where they deliver your non-LBS purchases to if you're not in). Library, barbers. Sports club. Garage.

Co-op does fresh croissants of a morning, Mace does kegs of Guzzler.

Vicar runs an annual charity beer festival (well worth attending).

The street we're on seems to have a MTBer or roadie in every house and our children still get to play out on the street - meaning the adults wander out every so often and tea and coffee start getting offered round.

Yes the house prices are silly.

York's great (if flat) but do check the flood plain maps.

My final comment above - a lot of stuff round here is dry and very unlikely to flood. Some of it less so. Check if you're thinking of moving. Though it's probably 15 years since I saw it this bad.

Many thanks for all the comments. Apparently there is a large housing developmnet on the cards for Wheldrake which could well flood the market so making any 70's properties, which Wheldrake has a lot of, more difficult to shift. With the investment cap on, it would seem that Fulford, Haxby, Compmanthorpe would bring more capital appreciation and higher rental yield should it ever need to be rented out. They all appear to have more amenities too.

Out of curiosity, what is the commute time from Wheldrake into York morning and going back in the evening?

If you beat the morning rush & go right into the city centre your looking at 15 to 2o mins maximum but get caught in the queue on the A19 & 35 mins

On a evening it's a steady moving flow of traffic heading out again on the A19, once you get to Crockey Hill bend where you turn of the A19 it's 5 mins & you'd be in the village.

York is lovely! We live in the centre, but my boss lives in Wheldrake, commutes in 6 days a week and has no problems. It's best if you get in before 8am though. Trains everywhere, London in 2hrs. Peaks, Moors, Dales, Lakes all day trip distance away. York is pretty flat, but makes commuting by bike easy. If we were to live out it would be Haxby, as lovely viable with good road biking from the door. Pubs, pubs, pubs!
