I've got a lads weekend away at the end of this month and we're off to Gloucester! I've never been to Gloucester so looking for some guidance on what's good and what to avoid - eating, drinking, stuff to do in daytime to keep us out of the pubs.
Gloucester is worth avoiding. Cheltenham is just up the road though.

FTFY.
Seriously - who the **** chose Gloucester ? đŸ˜¯

Nail on head...
Gloucester docks isn't that bad.... but why Gloucester FFS???????? unless your're going to Kingsholm i am really at a loss.
Not my choice BTW - I just looked on the map and saw it was near the FoD so thought I'd go early and get some riding in. Having never been to Gloucester from the feedback so far it doesn't sound promising!
When I was 13, Alan Hudson's grandmother told me never to trust anybody from Gloucestershire. I've heeded that advice ever since and I'm still alive, so I think there must be some truth in it. So that might be something to bear in mind. Having said that, it was also her that said that if you fart and sneeze at the same time you do a backflip, and that's possibly not true, because I did do that once and one of my feet didn't even leave the ground let alone get anywhere near doing a backflip, all that happened was that the force of the sneeze made my arsehole shut with a bang and it hurt for hours. Hope you enjoy your weekend.
Gloucester has some excellent pubs, some great riding on the doorstep and an old and fairly interesting cathedral. That's about it, and I'm not sure how much the last two will be of use on a lads weekend.
Went to the docks for the first time last weekend-quite nice but the town looked grim.
Cheltenham is nice in places but nothing to get excited about. Bath would be my choice if you wanted somewhere nice to visit.
'Nam is where it's at. Not Gloucester.
The docks are alright in a shopping with the wife kind of way, and there's one or two nice bars. But I cant think of much else.
I think I only go to Gloucester to get my motorbike serviced and buy Le Creuset pans đŸ™‚
An early evening in Gloucester is merely lairy and depressing.
Then the Forresters turn up.
Turn. Run. Run as fast as you can. Don't look back.
Cheltenham is nice, Bath is really lovely. Apart from a beautiful cathedral Gloucester has no redeeming features.
Barton street is the place to go. đŸ˜‰ All sorts of food emporiums down there.
Best to take some mates with baby blue berets and white painted vehicles as well.
Seriuosly?
It's a s***hole.
Come to the FoD and spend a night in Cinderford. That's not called the monkey tump for nothing.
Ciderford and Gloucester are both a way down the evolutionary tree, chuck a trip to Coleford and it is like an unholy trinity đŸ˜‰
The best bit about Gloucester is that Cheltenham is next door!
The only reason Cheltenham looks good is its proximity to Gloucester.
I grew up in Walsall so fully appreciate what an utter hole Gloucester is.
I live halfway between Gloucester and Cheltenham and my missus works in Gloucester Quays. The town centre is vile but walking down the high street gives you an ego boost, the people are from a different planet.
There is nowhere to drink, weatherspoons at the Quays is the best bar in town. It's known that it is not a safe place to be in the evening, the homeless and crazy are usually out in force. It's vile.
Whoever chose Gloucester needs hoofing.
It is a ***hole, but I feel I need to defend the once magnificent city a bit. If you know where to look there is some fascinating history to be discovered which links into significant parts of our countries past.
Not quite what you go away for on a lads weekend though. If you're with bikes, get along to flyup417 and then spend the evening in Cheltenham.
There is a nice craft beer bar at the Docks.
Other than that I would head to Cheltenham.
@thegreatape, thank you.
A brilliant end to a poor week, I'm sitting here crying with laughter, Mrs Clatter keeps asking 'what are they on about now?'
I don't go to Gloucester these days, but I've heard that cafe rene is good for drinks and music. Come to the fod for a ride though it's less than half an hour away. If you don't know the off piste stuff give me shout if you want a friendly guide for the day, there's so many great trails here but you need local knowledge to get the best out of it.
Have fun in Glossturd...
22 years ago I left Gloucester after having the misfortune of living & working there for 8 years and I can see it's obviously not changed at all.
I think during the Fred West saga (I was living on Cromwell St!!!) one of the papers summed it up perfectly after their reporter had spent a month there "The city evolution forgot"
Pigface is spot on.
We had the pleasure of a night out on the town in Gloucester last year on a lads FOD weekend. Wasn't that bad. We started off at the dock end, was nice, modern chain pubs, quite busy. We then wandered into the town itself. Definitely not quite as nice, but we still had a good time. Lots of half decent pubs, some not so decent. Unfortunately we ended the night in one of the not so nice pubs but it was a lads night out, so pretty much better in every way in than a night in. I've definitely had worse nights out.
Grew up in the Forest and drank in Gloucester. It had its charms. None of which i would be keen to repeat. If you must go, Eastgate Street always used to be busy, The Pig Inn the City always had a good (ish) metal night, the René had 'character' and well, that's about it. I'm not so sure what is like these days.
Like everyone else, we pre-drank in Gloucester then went out in Cheltenham.
Good luck.
Keep away from puddles, a well-known GP nearly drowned.
My wife and her family are from Gloucester.
There's a reason she and I live on the south coast.....
DrP
Best thing about the M5 northbound - goes straight past it!
There is nowhere to drink, weatherspoons at the Quays is the best bar in town.
There is somewhere next door to that weatherspoons to drink... somewhere very good called TANK. They do fantastic beer in oh-so hipster 2/3 pint glasses đŸ˜‰
As above, Gloucester would be very very low down on my list of places to visit for a lads weekend. Great riding near by though đŸ˜‰
I stayed in gloucester a few weeks ago as a mate got married in a nearby country estate.
What a dump! The dock area was ok but everywhere else was full of toothless begging crackheads. I thought it was going to be a bit like Bath but i couldnt have been more wrong.

True, Brewhouse is decent in Cheltenham so assume the one in Gloucester is aswell.
Still not enough to make a good weekend!
I try to stay away and have been mostly successful. The worst things in Gloucester are 'Gloucester and its residents' (according to those who live there)

Cheltenham OTOH has a range of atmospheres from 'Gloster lite' to utter poncense. In fact Cheltenham is the most bipolar place I've ever lived.
Whatever you decide hope you have fun and don't get into too many 'tampin' down' shenanigans.
Not at all clatter, pleased to have helped.
There's a Dr Foster went there once, not sure what happened to him.
I fail to see what's so good about Cheltenham either. Reasonable selection of bike shops but otherwise nasty and crowded and full of pissheads.
I'll exclude any nice buildings from both places of course.
I know this one Drac, it was in Private Eye.
Dr Foster went to Gloucester, in a shower of rain. But he wasn't too bothered because he was driving to the golf course in one of his Range Rovers while his secretary sent all his patients to the pharmacist.
