After my previous post re what people carrier / van.

Mrs likes the galaxy 🙂

So how much more room is there really compared to a standard estate ( currently have vauxhall vectra ) to me it looks huge, it must just be the height!

Can bikes just wheel into newer models as seats don't come out?

What else?

Cant comment on the bikes but if the size of the old galaxy is anything to go by, the room is a lot greater than an estate.

The three seats in the middle row and the back seats are proper sized seats so you dont feel squahed up if three adults are in the back

The best thing for me was all the back seats recline, and so did our britax car seats (they had good head support too) so if I was going a long distance I would pack the car up and leave after teatime. Kids ready for bed and each with a blanket, seats reclined and they would be asleep in minutes. Bliss when you have a 5+ hour journey ahead.

Was poking about the local Ford garage today, and the Galaxy is a big car. Well over 6ft long boot with the seats down.

The Internet says 6ft 8 long and 3ft 8 wide at the narrowest point for an old Galaxy.

Had to believe the seats don't come out- seats come out of anything with the right spanner. Is it not just that they lost their quick-release-ness?

Could try & pick up one of the last Seat Alhambras. Think they went to 59/00 plate, unless you need to buy new. We have the old model Galaxy & honestly wouldn't want the new one. It's more of a posh full 7 seater than the old model that could be stripped out like a van if needed. We can get four seats & four full built bikes inside ours. Front seats spin 180deg so it's great for picnics, camping etc. It's just so versatile. Took 5 work colleagues to Snowdon & they were very impressed with how comfy it was. Proper rear heating & A/C etc.

We usually do the kids into PJ's & reclined under a blanket thing too, for long drives.

My mum used to have the galaxy. Was my first car! I still can't get over how big they are inside. We had a 53 plate. I took all the seats out and chucked in 3 bikes with wheels and kit. I used it to move into uni with 4 seats and that had two bikes and lots of other stuff. Great for space!

What I did notice is that it handled like a sofa on cart springs. It was rubbish to drive. We had the 2.3 petrol and we calculated it did 23mpg on average.

Now she has a new Touran and its brilliant. I put 2 bike with wheels on in the back. Yes its smaller but its such fun to drive and gets 48mpg comfortably.

To be honest though, Galaxy is fantastic for the versatility and size.

We have had one for 3 years now and its great if you have 3 kids and a dog, like biking and go on camping holidays. Had an Smax before. They drive a bit better, but really who cares when you are loaded with Mrs and kids. The sloping boot of the smax was a pain come holiday time which is why we changed. Its much bigger than the volvo 850 we also had. The seats fold flat without taking them out which I find nice.

I've had a 53 plate tdi Galaxy for a couple of months and it's mint!

50mpg for long motorway hauls if you are sensible, seats come out easily once you've got the knack, much cheaper than an smax cos there's so many about and you get to see more scenery than a normal car being so high up.

Handles great and is proper nippy too, but then I used to drive a beat up caddy van so the bar was set pretty low 🙂

What's the height of the load bay with the seats out? I'm interested whether I can just wheel a bike in there, or would I need to drop/remove the seatpost? (Just measured the height of my saddle - 108cm from the floor...

Rear boot measures 100cm in height but you get an extra 10-15 cm once in. My road bike wheels in at angle then up right to travel. 29er need front wheel off.

Think older model gave more room.
