A few years back we stayed at the top of Sardinia in September.. One day a cold wind started blowing ,most of the shops shut and the ferries operated a reduced timetable. I noticed that the trees grew towards the sea rather than away from it.
To me this indicates a seriously constant wind. Once the wind started it ruined our holiday.
Would staying at 5 o'clock on Corsica mean we would be subjected to the same wind?
Don’t know about 5 o clock but we stayed on the north coast for a week last October and were on the beach/ in the sea most days to cool off. Not terribly hot (I don’t mind 30 degrees normally on holiday) but certainly not holiday ruining cold. Plenty of walks up the coast and into the mountains.
We went in Sept 2008 & although I don't remember it being particularly windy, it did rain one day.
& I mean RAIN.
Like proper airborne aqueosity of biblical proportions.
I went the last week of September 2017 which is the last week of the tourist season. Weather was generally very good. One day of rain but we went sight seeing in Bonifacio. Stayed just outside Sartene. Can highly recommend walking to the waterfalls at Purcarraccia.
We drove round the whole island in Sept 2014 in glorious weather. We were camping wild every night and I have no recollection of any wind. Swam, in sea or inland rivers most every day too. Beautiful place but very tied up now with rules and regs and most everywhere worth visiting will be overrun with other people. Hard to find anywhere off the beaten track there now.
Yes, it does get windy quite regularly.
There is a reason there are plenty of windsurfing/kitesurfing and sailing bases located along the northern coastline of Sardinia. The wind tends to come down from the north, gets funnelled between the Maddelena islands and through the straits of Bonifacio. 20-30knts Mistral are common.
Is there a problem you have with wind?
We went in the second week of October a couple of years ago. Stayed .ear Palombagio beach, but drove around a fair bit. More sheltered on the East of the island, as you'd expect. Not especially windy on the west though, certainly not holiday-ruining wind. Very windy at the top of the mountains round Zonza, though. Great holiday.
Hard to find anywhere off the beaten track there now.
Just go a few weeks later!
Is there a problem you have with wind
It’s cold ,blows my umbrella over and ruins snorkelling.
Is there a best side to avoid it?
NWest/West as it gets funnelled down then “squirts” through the straits.
Holiday on the East Coast to avoid it..
And it’s not normally “cold” temps are in the 30C range and it’s always sunny unless there’s a cold front coming through (you can’t do anything about those, weather just happens)
Most warm sunny beaches are on the eastern side of both islands, more rocky outcrops on the western.
I did the GR20 in Sept 2004, there is a known phenomena where the air from the mountains moves downslope in the evening after a hot day (katabatic wind?). It can be pretty strong if there is enough temperature difference. It won't destroy your tent but it's enough to make you quite cold and ruin your BBQ.
Corsica is basically a big mountain in the sea, hence the thermal mass of the sea exacerbates this effect.
