Just got a call from my folks and told to buy them a new TV. Any recommendations , was looking at £500 Sony 50’ tv at currrys , but will spend extra if the picture would be significantly better . OLED ? My folks watch mainly terrestrial stuff ..
Any thoughts
Cheers
J
Any thoughts here before I go and buy an audiovisual magazine or get a which subscription or some such . I am tempted to get him an Oled ..
Perhaps not relevant if only for terrestrial but apps on our sony are woeful. We've ended up using a streaming stick (roku) instead.
For under £500 Whcih recommend the LG 49NANO816NA
OLED TVs are brilliant but they cost £1000+ (LG OLED55B9PLA) and unfortunately I don't have an excuse to replace my current TV at the moment.
John Lewis or Richer Sounds include a 5 year and 6 year guarantee respectively.
I wouldn't touch Currys with a bargepole.
An OLED isn't really worth it if most of the content they're watching is SD or HD, it comes into it's own for 4k, especially with HDR. I would generally advise to stick with Samsung or LG and read reviews for models you short list, there's other good alternatives but they're more hit and miss in their product ranges (not that Samsung or LG don't have the odd duff model).
As above if you find something you like in Currys then check John Lewis or Richer Sounds as it will generally be the same price but you'll get a longer discount.
Perfect advise thanks . My dad has mentioned a Sony, but only because he had one before . We have an LG and it is super .
Thanks for which recommendation
LG OLED55B9PLA Should do it, thanks J R.
But I will give him the choice on the priceer stuff
If they are willing to pay for it got for OLED, especially if they intend to keep the TV for a good long time.
Personally I like LG (and wouldn't touch a Samsung if you paid me). LG seem to get the most praise for their interface and I believe still make the OLED panels that are used by every single other manufacturer. One caveat with LG is they currently don't have ITV/Channel 4/ Channel 5 catch up apps available due to some legal BS.
I've a 55" Samsung Q70, well below OLED price but still a little on the spendy side (for me at least!) - it was at the sweet spot for performance vs price for me. I love the simple remote but it also comes with a full featured one which lets you skip some of the on-screen menu navigation. The apps work really well*, but the TV's less than a year old so time will tell how often they get updated when it's knocking on a bit.
*except iPlayer, which works flawlessly but doesn't remember my password between sessions.

nonsense. It does look EVEN BETTER with HDR (which is pointless on a non-oled panel in my opinion), but resolution has zero impact on the differences of OLED compared to a LCD display, and it makes the vast majority of content, hdr or not, look way better.
OP. I would wait till black friday if possible - oleds are typically down under a grand then (I think mine was £950 or something a couple of years ago)
I've just bought a 50" LG UN8100 series from Costco for about £400'ish.
Good picture and sound - does all we need. First one went back as it kept crashing after streaming with the built in apps after about 40 mins - replacement is fine, although I might take it back and swap for the 55".
(one of the beauties of buying from Costco.... 5 year warranty and you can take it back within 90 days for any reason.)
Thanks all , he is saying that not worth it for him for an Oled . So that LG on which advice looks the ticket.
Cheers

Well my comment wasn't really 4k looks better on an OLED than a non-OLED (if that's what you mean)? More that if you're upscaling SD/HD content on a 4k TV you aren't getting a great picture anyway - certainly not one it's worth the additional expense of an OLED to view. Some HD content maybe it's arguable it's still worth it for the better blacks etc. but I still think, unless cost isn't an issue, that it's not worth going for an OLED if you're not watching a fair amount of 4k content.
I've got an LG with one of the smart/magic? remote controls. Well worth the extra few quid to get the cleverer remote with the 'pointer' and scrolling wheel on it.
Yep I saw those smart pointer things and would have liked one .
So off to find a non Oled LG at 49 inch with a pointer .
