i've been given a nikon D200, a hand me down gift. It takes a nice pic. I don't have a ton of cash, and want a zoom lens for it. does anyone have a good experience of a particular lens? for sports photography.

is this kinda thing ok..
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261202450333?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648

or even this older (but nicely made?) nikkor lens
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271192466933?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648

or a giant thing like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sigma-135-400mm-f-4-5-5-6-D-APO-SLR-Lens-for-Nikon-/261207738947?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item3cd131ca43

sorry, don't know much about this stuff. the d200 isn't a full size sensor camera.
Maybe these aren't for it?

any help greatly appreciated

Ok, I used to sell bucket loads of the sigma Apo 70-300 back in the days when I was in the trade and we used to get very few back faulty. That one look in good condition too

With your D200 it will give you a effective focal length of 105-450mm a decent range for general sports photography, you might struggle with gaining a decent shutter speed though.

The Nikkor lens never sold in great numbers and was a cheap lens in the Nikkor range, so never had enough experience of them to form a opinion

There is a Nikkor lens which has vr and covers 55-300mm (110-450mm) price wise you might be looking up to £170 second hand, but I think it would be worth it at the nikons vr stabiliser works very well.

Should have asked what type of sports you are trying to capture, as a decent fixed focal length lens might also be a option too.

thanks loads for that... didn't realise the smaller (normal) dslr sensor would almost double the zoom.
I'll be using it for car rallying.. and event photography - horses. So maybe fixed focal length might
not be right... i'd imagine i'll need the flexibility of a zoom for that type of stuff.

I will have a look for the nikkor 55-300 now and see what's about.

All those lenses will work on the D200.

Used to own the Sigma, passible on film but horrible with digital.

The Nikon AF 70-200mm is no better (though nice build quality). The 70-200mm only has a good name because of one US shyster (Ken Rockwell) on the net that bigged it up before selling his for a huge amount.

You want either the entry level Nikon 55-220 AF-S VR, or if you can afford it the better 70-300mm VR (which I have). Both capable of excellent imagery to compliment your D200 (which I also have).

Buying anything cheaper you'll just be very disappointed.

Yep that's the one, I have the 70-300mm version and if you check my profile you will see my Flickr account with some car rallying shots I took with it

I had an 80-200 f2.8 AF-ED Nikon lens. Paid £600 s/h sold it through Ffordes for over £800!

Lovely lens, never cost me a penny. Heavy though. F2.8 at that focal length was amazing

Good glass holds its value.

Keep an eye on the used sales sections on the likes of the London Camera Exchange and Park Cameras the 55-300 comes up on them now and then.

You're not talking about the f2.8 70-200? Absolutely superb piece of glass.

I wouldn't go with any of those options

I think your best bet is the Nikon 55 200 Vr

The First Sigma will be soft

The Nikon will be not great and have no hand shake compensation stuff and not save much money

on here with warranty from £109

Lots of good advice folks- for what little my opinion is worth,
I would always spend my money on a second hand fast (f2.8 for example)
Lens than a new cheaper, slower one (f.5.6). Remember for each f stop you go down,
You double the length of time the shutter stays open- not so great for
Action shots. Happy snapping 🙂

+1

The Nikon will also be quicker at auto-focusing on a wide aperture lens, which helps for sports stuff.

The Nikon 70-200 f2.8 is a stoater. I have the Sigma version, which simply isn't as good when used back to back, but isn't a bad lens at all. Its just the Nikon is so good.

I'd get the 70-300VR for your uses. Long reach, and both rallying and most horse events will be outdoor I assume? Then that extra reach will be invaluable. Also VR comes into its own on long zooms.

If you want low price quality glass, look at buying a much older Nikkor lens (pre DSLR), it will work fine, but won't auto-focus - so manual control. But, still usable.

Everyone says that, but in Olympus world anything that is of any use on digital is valued and ends up just as expensive as the digital stuff. Fast teles are still expensive items.
