Had a bit of a disaster with mice in our motorhome and they have nibbled through some thin telecom type cables but thinner. So wondering what is the best way to re-connect them. I was thinking something like phone plug and socket ,where /I just push cables into plug /socket and connect to ends up but unsure what they a called.
Anyone any pointers please.
Cheers Simon

Yeah that sort of thing but not so heavy duty.
I have six wires about 1/4 the size of phone ones

Still a bit big .

You can snap/trim them down..

Or just strip the cable, twist together and wrap with insulation tape.

would wago boxes not work here? strip some cable at each end and user a box per cable?

you need a crimping tool but you can get a basic one for a fiver on eBay!

That coupler you linked has an RJ45 socket on both sides I think, what are you actually trying to connect? does it already involve RJ45 plugs at both ends, and you're just trying to repair the middle part of the cable?

There are also RJ11 connectors which are smaller (4 wires vs 8)

well the first thing you linked to is the male, and the coupler you linked to is the female connector... you've still got to connect it to your equipment at either end though... what does that use? Or is it literally just a wire coming out of a piece of equipment? If so, what sort of wire, how many cores?

Sounds to me like what you need is a soldering iron and some insulation tape or heat-shrink if you're feeling posh. And some mousetraps.

I think a photo would help here, or at least a better description than "small wires". What are they for? What voltage are they carrying? Are the wires solid core or multi-stranded? Are they single wires or a multi-core cable? What's a "phone wire" when it's at home, do you mean the four core cable you'd use to wire an internal extension?

They only thing I can say with any degree of confidence at this point is that your RJ45 idea is terrible on several levels. (-:

Looks like its for the heating system in a motorhome as that's not working atm.
Is a rj11 a smaller rj45 .
is data cable mearsured on wire core size ?

Thanks Simon

That coupler is to join two male RJ45 plugs. They're shit for Ethernet, ie the purpose they're intended for, let alone some vaguely described DIY randomness.

Even if it were a good idea, which it isn't, it sounds like RJ11 would be a more appropriate choice.

RJ11 is what's likely to be in the back of your ADSL router.

Now step away from the plugs and do it properly.

yes, but it would work, if you wanted to join to RJ45 plugs with an easily replaceable run of cable in the middle... agree there are better solutions though, but we'd need more info to suggest them!!

yes RJ11 is smaller... the gauge of the wire & number/type of cores determines what connector is most appropriate... are there any connectors already in place you can take a pic of, or is the cable hard-wired at both ends?

You mean replace the full cable ?? Will have a look but would of thought cables fitted as they built the motorhome so might be a bit tricky.

Jelly Crimps are commonly used for joining fine wires. There are approximately eleventy thousand in any BT relay box. Might be what you're looking for to do the job.

Second on jelly crimps. Best thing to simply join thin wires. they're designed to cut through the insulation too so you don't need to strip first but that probably only works on solid core cable like phone or data. They will join a stranded cable but you will likely need to strip it first.

I'd be looking to replace the whole cable, see what plugs are on the end of it and order a suitable length of pre-made cable.
Failing that soldering iron and heat shrink insulation for your joints!
Pictures of the cable would help and ends if possible!

Yes those Jelly crimps look ok . Would reduce the number of joints to just two so thats a plus and now you mention it I have seen them on BT type stuff.
Cheers

Had another look and should be able to replace full cable . Its RJ11 to RJ11 6 pin/core .
Thanks for all you help guys I am a bit wiser in the data cable tech.
