What to avoid?
I went via my dentist, they made up custom mouth guard things and gave me some of the bleach plus super-flouride stuff to take the punch out of the sensitivity. £500. Did work, was worth it IMO. Had 3 appointments, 1 to make, 1 to check and 1 to follow up.
The stuff was this (not read the link, but that's the stuff) https://www.dentaly.org/en/teeth-whitening/boutique-whitening/
If you're west midlands I can share the link to my dentist, he's excellent.
I also did it via my dentist, wasn't worth trying to save a few £ IMO. I got a custom mouth guard which I applied gel to each night to wear whilst sleeping. It did a very good job and worth the few hundred I paid.
Fairly recent press on the dangers of whitening kits/services on market at the moment so take care - it’s not without risk.
Have you tried a few different whitening toothpastes first?
Thanks, folks.
I was wondering about those UV gadgets that are advertised on Amazon.
They seem quite in inexpensive, but the cost of the gels can mount up?
Like you mentioned, it’s maybe best to visit a dentist. I’ll need to get a cap replaced.
I live in Glasgow, and like everywhere else, there’s a bit of a waiting list.
Do you want whiter teeth or stain removal? Whiter teeth means less enamel at some level. I use a small amount of an expensive Oral B tooth whitening toothpaste a couple of times a week after brushing with normal sensodyne. Keeps tea stains at bay and has more than double the level of peroxide of the “whitening” toothpastes. It won’t damage teeth. Sensitive gums will notice the peroxide. I also use a polishing brush on my electric toothbrush.
I declined a polish at last years checkup.
Usually on offer. https://www.boots.com/oral-b-3d-white-clinical-restore-diamond-clean-75ml-10323496
Whiter teeth shouldn’t mean less enamel.
Enamel is pretty translucent, the main shade of the tooth usually comes from the dentine inside. Dentist supplied whitening shouldn’t affect enamel but should lighten the dentine…
Removing any enamel may make the tooth look darker.
Surface stain is different. Several ways to harmlessly remove it, polishing or air abrasion with the right material shouldn’t affect the enamel.
Uk Over the counter whitening toothpaste may reduce stain but can’t contain enough of the right ingredients to whiten.
Internet bought whitening (or non regulated beautician supplied) can contain anything with all the risks that may entail.
I’d speak to your local friendly dentist 😉
Ps if you whiten, existing fillings/crowns will not change shade. If they are obvious at the front, you may need to budget to replace once you are happy with the final tooth colour.
Pps no whitening is available on NHS, so you will be paying privately
Ppps to my knowledge the light activation is mainly smoke and mirrors, but it sells
I was given Opalescence 10% gel by my dentist, it's the lowest strength they do so can be left overnight and you'd struggle to overdo it as its relatively weak. I think I had to use it for a few weeks to get the desired results and I wasn't going from very brown to very white!
I didn't have any change to my teeth sensitivity and as I still have the mouth guards I could buy some more gel and redo it in future. I think I had them done about 5 years ago and they're still just as white now.
I’ve got a lidls knock-off oral-b toothbrush, so I guess that it won’t hurt to try the pukka oral-b whitening toothpaste.
Until I get to the dentist…
