I am trying to remember the name of a old message board type thing I was a member of in the early 2000s but the system had been around for some time. It was invite only accessed via terminal I remember. Loads of boards from tech to politics. Anyone remember it? There was probably a vi extension for it it was that geeky.

As above, Usenet is the only one I can think of. I think they used the nntp: url and I used to access them using Outlook Express.
I think that Google Groups still provides access to them.
