I take it all the naysayers dress in plain white clothes all of the time?

Absolutely, because this is the only other option when the original point has been so misunderstood. 😕

Driving through Onger high street(Northeast Essex) last summer, saw some fella on his own in full HTC kit, bling sunglasses etc coming toward me. Thought, Ha, wannabe wonder how chubby this guy is going to be ??

But as I got closer ... Hmmm he looks pretty lean.... hold on a minute... it's not?... is it?.... it can't be... It blooming is...

"Cav, Cav"

I saw a figure in front of me while I was out for a ride a while ago wearing world champs top (plain white with the rainbow bands), again thought much the same as you did. Got closer and realised it was Sarah Storey, multiple Paralympic medal winner and current World Champion in a couple of cycling disciplines.

😳

and you think its sad that cyclists want to support them?
not at all. But to dress as if you are one of them is pretty sad. Particularly if you get your name on the strip like f**tball fans and various 'Sky' riders on certain sportives.
In a nutshell, if you're under 12, or ride for the team, it's fair enough.

funny, talking about Cav, I did the same a few weeks back. Large group, riding through Otley in West Yorks, various jerseys but a couple of GB shirts at the back. One was Cav.

Sorry Gsucks

I dont mean to be picking at your every post... but

I'd rather wear baggies and a peaked lid on my road bike than give free advertise to Murdoch...

If the "GB Team" was sponsored by anyone else I'd happy wear one of their long sleeved jerseys

ha. I've done this too with Sarah. Except it's more a case of 'she came past me in a 10' than I got closer to her 😉

I've got a couple of retro tops, an old Rock Shox one (that I dare to wear on my road bike) and a La Vie Claire top from Prendas. I may even treat myself to another one for 2 before summer.

I can't be bothered reading all 3 pages.

Has anyone reeled off the usual "don't wear it unless you've earnt it" dribble regarding replica team kit/yellow jersey/KOM etc... ?

In the past I've had a GT jersey & a replica TdF Yellow Jersey.

I didn't "earn" them, but I did earn the money that paid for them.
Does that count?

Absolutely, because this is the only other option when the original point has been so misunderstood.

If you insist that people wearing jerseys wear them for one reason then what other point would you like me to take?

So you don't wear plain white clothes then?

People can buy team jerseys because they like the style / colour / fit or whatever. Do you honestly believe that everyone wearing a team kit ACTUALLY thinks they are amazing riders and actually on par with the pro's and secretly annoyed because thet have to buy their kit?

In a nutshell, if you're under 12, or ride for the team, it's fair enough.

Awesome idea Andy. Thats sorted what to do for my lads 13th birthday. We'll have a BBQ and bonfire in the back garden and burn every item of cycle clothing he has that's not his current team / club.

ro5ey - thanks for the heads up. He does indeed have a spiderman suit and a bob the builder outfit. I'll take them off him before he gets himself into trouble fighting crime or fixing next doors banging gate.

so much hate and judgement. i wonder what team riders think when they see people sporting their kit. cos if you care, then that is all that matters, right? being insulted by proxy is a bit odd.

Well that's essentially a Mondrian and a bit of a design classic so even the most ardent "no team kit" advocate is never going to object to that. If you'd suggested the carerra "denim" short though...

Renault Elf shorts and Jersey here.

I have quite a few retro trade tops. Peugeot/ Shell, Molteni, KAS. Also have a Swiss Saxobank top too. Still wear them all during the summer and bought because I like them.

Can't believe people are really that bothered about team kits

Does the Molteni jersey have the world champ stripes on it? Been trying to find a plain one.

Yellow jersey/kom/world champ stripes/etc all out of bounds IMO.

See it's funny. For me, wearing all the retro kit (lovely that it is) is no different to wearing current team kit - it's just inverted snobbery along the lines of 'I was there, man' to approve of one but not the other

IMO of course 🙂

We get quite a few guys in full Sky kit out in Surrey because a lot of people who work for Sky get supplied with team kit. Think they get it if they're riding the Marmott etc.

You don't seem to get so many people riding in trade kit anymore because you can get cycle specific no branded clothing, where as years ago you could only get replica team kit or club kit to ride in.

Seeing people in trade kit doesnt bother me, as long as it matches 😉 But I really don't like seeing people riding in World Champs kit as it should only be worn by someone who has earned it! It's a bit like wearing football kit and carrying a replica world cup around with you!

I bought a collection of team jerseys in Bali that are exceedingly questionable. Think Cofidis Specialized and HTC Look. I will wear them every opportunity I get when I'm back home.

it's more akin to wearing an england shirt with the star on to show your team has won the world cup.

Re. Snobbery about rainbow stripes.

My road bike (a Specialized, oh the shame) has rainbow stripes as part of the paintwork. Presumably because the year I bought it Cancellara was TT world champ and he rode a Spech.

Do people now think I'm an arrogant arse for riding this bike despite never having actually won the world champs?

I'm always happy to give advice on how to raise your child, but I'm not sure you have to ritually burn the clothing. Whatever floats your boat though.

I still use some old Bristol MTB Club tops even though I'm not a paid member any-more. They make a great additional layer. They don't seem to wear out and I like the blue.

I never to wear cloths with big company branding on them... bit lame IMO

However, still waiting for the Lidl Cycle top.

The bare minimum for wearing any form of replica sports kit is that you at least actively participate in the sport.

So, cyclists wearing replica kit? Acceptable, seeing as they actually cycle.

Wendyball fans wearing replica shirts? Questionable, seeing as most just sit on their butts eating pies and drinking beer 🙂 and don't actually play wendyball to any degree.

And how do swimming fans show their allegiance? I don't remember ever seeing spectators at swimming events wearing trunks, swimming caps & goggles?

Do F1 fans watch the [s]procession[/s] race wearing fire-proof overalls & helmets?

It must be pretty tricky spectating on skiing with all the crowd wearing replica skis.

My five year old wears a f••king batman outfit plus cape when he goes riding. His little brother looks at him and shakes his head. I should probably get him a login for here 🙂

Capes are definitely the way forward.

Some middle age blokes turn up for a mid week game of five-a-side in a full Man Utd strip with Rooney plastered on their back. Why? I am not sure, but I don't think they believe they are Wayne Rooney and they seem happy enough. Similarly some blokes seem to want to wear coats with 'ferrari' or 'porsche' on, but don't own those cars. I think they look a bit daft, but I leave them to it. Same with bike team kit, it's not for me, companies produce some pretty nice non team kit, but hey. I have wondered if there is some mental or genetic link conecting them, or they were just the spoilt kids whose parents let them have everything but from socialising with the team kit wearer's when they are not wearing it, they seem like pretty standard people.

Slightly astounded by some peoples prejudice views on this to be honest, are people that uptight about what others choose to wear when riding?
Theres some pretty big assumptions being made about people because they choose to wear a jersey for whatever reason.

Oh and for balance I don't have or wear replica kit. I always wear my team kit but I have about 8 team jerseys / bibs etc and it would never occur to me to not wear it or buy something neutral to wear whilst training etc.

I will start with my pathetic bid of " 2: I used to have matching kinesis frame and jersey". But really I wanna hear from someone out there with helmet, overshoes, socks etc....

I'm a sucker for our 'team' kit - but only becuase its cheap, good, and a bit different ...

I can see why people pick up dirt cheap end-of-season pro team kit (for winter training, on their own, in the dark). Otherwise, very little excuse IMO, and yes I am a judgemental prick ... 🙂

I only have one piece of "Team" kit - a Garmin jersey they were giving away with every Edge 705 GPS.

I did have an Orange jersey once - and a pair of Specialized shorts and a Specialized cap. In fact, it's the cap I'm wearing in this photo...

You know what? I'm so massively unashamed of my team kit and matching bike, and so comfortable with my own ability on a road bike, that I'm going to post a pic, just for the hell of it (although I fear it will only be outclassed by whatever Druidh produces next...)

BOOM! Me tearing a Selkirk climb a new one, I even passed like 5 other riders on the way up. Judge away! 8)

Better yet, and from the same weekend, team kit which doesn't even match the bike I'm riding, is that better or worse?

...however it may also have been because I'm a fat pasty giffer who gets out of breath running up stairs. Nonetheless I maintain the right to wear liquigas gear because

1) My family has some distant Italian lineage
2) My favourite rider is/was Pantani
3) I used to ride a Bianchi
4) It looks a lot cooler than most unbranded/heh-hilarious slogan cycling tops out there
5) [s]I'm really really excited by the Italian bottled gas industry[/s]
