I've been PAYE with 3 companies over the last year (1x perm role, 1x contract thru an umbrella company who I left because they were taking a lot more from my pay than my own calculations showed and 1x contract through a 3rd party but on their payroll.
Anyway, just done my tax return and HMRC reckon I've underpaid tax to the tune of 6% of my gross pay...
What's the process to dispute this? It's a huge chunk of money...
Direct with HMRC or get an accountant?
Worth every penny here as self employed and co. director for last 10 years or so....
Simples. Compare your calc with theirs and then call to discuss and/or appeal if you think you're right.
IR35?
Good luck. I was landed with an 8.5k 'Benefit in Kind' tax bill just for taking out a staff mortgage. I challenged them through the Tax Tribunal Service stating that I should not be taxed just because the Bank of England base rate dropped.
Guess what. I lost. HMRC are robbing b!stards who go after the likes of you and me and yet let the large corporations get away with paying very little.
If the calculations are right, I think you will struggle to over turn the decision
why do you think you haven't underpaid? what part of the calc do you disagree with? I work on the system, so may be able to help / explain...
Don't phone them, you'll just queue for 30 minutes only for them to tell you to write to them. Just write to them. They are usually pretty good in my experience - if you are right, you'll get your money.
