Had a nice little surprise from HMRC this mornIng. Should I be chuffed, and spend it, or just pay off a bit of overdraft in the anticipation that they were mistaken in correcting a mistake?
Sadly, bike related purchases aren't an option, so that won't be colouring my judgement this time.
Happened to my wife. They sent her a cheque for £800 saying she was due a rebate.
About 6 months later they sent a letter saying that she in fact owed them about £1000 and pay it now or else. She tried coomplaining and they were not interested.
Bum. That's what I'm worried about.
My dad had similar for 900 but then they asked for an extra 900 the year after.
His is complicated by the fact he accepted a company car from a director that was seeing out its lease. M3 convertible and ended up with an 12k annual company car tax bill.
It soon got left in the office car park as he went back to his normal A3.
I have overpaid the last two years running and had a cheque from HMRC. Only £120 mind, but still nice. Even if its money I have already paid them.
It depends why they are 'repaying' you.
I had 18 months 'paying' for a company car and health insurance from my previous job... of course I'd just keep that on despite leaving them, eh?
In my case a 'simple' over payment. And spent it....
Mine relates to a company car. Basically I think it's a minor error in the benefit in kind banding, bit I didn't think they'd got it wrong in the first place. Overdraft paydown it is then. Cheers.
