We shall be holidaying shortly in the area (plenty of Dartmoor riding) but what else is there to see and do in the area (dog friendly) and also any south coast beaches worth visiting?

Also any recommendations of places to eat and drink Yelverton/ Horrabridge greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I’m across the border on the Cornish banks of the Tamar.

Biking - if you like dh head to Gawton and Tavi Woodlands

Eating - on a sunny day the garden of the Elephant’s Nest is nice; in Tavi try the Cornish Arms for good food (higher prices and smaller portions than other places locally); or cycle the Drake’s Trail into Plymouth and eat at Rockets & Rascals on the Barbican

Beaches - I know S Cornwall better than the English beaches on your side of the river, but it’s not inconceivable for you to come across and head to Freathy (steep path onto the beach which is only out at low tide) or Kingsand/Cawsand

Grenduro and burraduro are running well at the moment but the bracken is growing fast. PM me and I’ll send you some pointers for stuff that isn’t that obvious to find.

The high moors are so dry at the moment stuff that’s usually a bog is running fast.

Dragonfly cafe in tavi is worth a look, Robertson’s is good for pizza.

Plenty of good beaches on the south both in Cornwall & Devon but a pain to get to from Tavistock. I tend to always head north as it’s quicker. It takes me about 45mins to get to Whitsand and about the same for Polzeath despite it being about 20m further.

Damn, best get myself down ASAP, have been riding east Dartmoor at the moment to avoid exactly that! For Burraduro is it only the trails before the no bikes allowed rocky section that get overgrown? I cant see the tech stuff next to sheeps tor being the same?

A bit of a hike from Yelverton but definitely worth it on a clear day - a dog walking stroll around Kit Hill Country Park (but be aware of mine workings - can be dog unfriendly), followed by a "Stack" all day breakfast in The Engine House cafe at Kelly Bray (nr Callington).

I seem to remember there are some nice trails in the town. Various size many rollable to get confidence. Been a few years though.

Other than that gert wide stoned track, wasn't it a bit soggy? There's been a fair bit of rain in the SW lately...

So far I've managed to avoid the worst of the weather so have even ventured out onto open moor land and got away with it, apart from falling over in a bog/stream but we won't mention that.

The woodland bits have got some proper terrifying wet roots though.  I'm not sure if they a special type of slippery root or I'm used to the Sarf Downs where everything is slippery so transitioning from chalk to roots doesn't seem too make any difference, whereas on Dartmoor its grippy loam and granite to teflon root so highlights the loss of grip.

Hopefully I'll get out tomorrow and see how the place is after a deluge.  The moor is tough on bikes, Mrs M's bike has snapped a suspension pivot bolt.

We’ve had so little rain for months it should dry out pretty quick although it looks like we’re due a few more rounds of rain.

Rockin bikes in Yelverton are pretty good if you need something sorted out.

There's always the dismantled railway track that goes up to Princetown for an all weather ride, nothing gnarly but good for stretching the legs, go from Burrator Reservoir and follow the track up to Princetown, there's a great café up there that hires bikes, then cruise back down again.
