I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I've always thought Tattoos were for a certain type of 'gentleman' if you get what I mean? I don't know why but my mindset has totally changed recently and I'm now thinking of getting one myself.

Any advice on first tattoos? Thinking of something around the shoulder and partway down the top of my arm so it can be easily covered when it needs to be but apart from that I haven't got a clue on a design. I live nr Manchester if anyone has any recommendations for a tattooist.

I'm a fan of tattoos and have several...however I find it weird that you don't have something in mind.

Surely, if something's going to be on you for ever...it has to mean something?

I agree with this.

No tattoos here, but not bothered about those that do.

Worst. Advice. Ever.

If it's going to be on you forever, make sure it has some kind of personal meaning to you. That way you won't end up looking like everyone else and you'll have something that will never go out of fashion.

I've got my first tattoo appointment in September and have chosen to tie together some artwork that comes from two of my favourite bands/albums: Bands that mean a lot to me and have defined my musical taste (and many great experiences) over the last 25 years or so.

Have the spice girls and take that really been around for 25 years? God it just seems like yesterday.

And to the op, think more. A tattoo isn't a fashion accessory you can take off.

When I was younger considered a tattoo...glad I didn't. Whilst I understand those that do (and I've got mates covered!)

I look back now at my hair, clothes, glasses etc and so glad I've been able to change them all! That wouldn't have been so easily done with a tattoo.

Saying that if I did ever consider one it would have to have real meaning to me then it would never feel 'out of fashion'.

It's called an opinion. Everyone has them, and you don't have to agree with any, or all, of them. It's entirely up to you.

Tattoos are a terrible idea, what are you thinking man! What's worse is that is gives such pillars of the community like lodders the opportunity to feel morally superior to someone.

I went to the tattoo parlour as moral support for a friend who wanted one. We flicked through the many sample pages of wolves and dream catchers and dolphins and koi carp and cyborgs and xenomorphs, and as we did I loudly critiqued the cliched nature of them all as well as the crude rendering, dodgy proportions and lack of knowledge of anatomy.

As we were about to leave the nice goth lady behind the desk (who had been quietly reading a magazine) stood up abruptly and said "So you think my designs are shit do you?"

I was a bit taken aback but caught, I just laughed and said yes. We ended up having a nice wee chat and she admitted everything on the walls were basically just for impulsive people who decided they needed a tattoo that morning and I gave her some pointers on how to sharpen up her drawing.

There's ways to voice an opinion, tho. One could just say I do no like tattoos, and that's just fine for all parties.

But when they say:

Just get a t shirt. Tattoos are shite.

They just come across as rude.

Thanks for the advice, both for and against. If anything it's made me aware that I do know broadly know what I want. I don't want any writing or pictures. I would like more of a symbol/pattern, something that represents a wave design as I grew up by the sea but I'd like to create my own design rather than just pick something from a wall or book that hundreds of people possibly have and it mean nothing.

If you feel as though you need it in a place that you can cover it up 'as and when' I wouldn't bother mate. I have one on my upper arm which I had done to remember somebody close to me who I lost nearly twenty years ago - can't see the point of hiding it just in case it offends somebody or may make them think differently if you?

Advice? Don't!

First off, ignore comments like this, and the opinions of people like Ioddrik; opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one.
Second, spend time looking at lots of different styles on the 'net, there are a bunch of Fb pages for various tattooists, look through Google images, just absorb what can be done these days, because there are some true artists in body art, being able to create watercolour effects, pointillist, just about anything you can think of.
Then think about what genuinely means something to you, personally, something significant that can be represented graphically, then find a bloody good tattooist who's work you've seen and who can talk through whatever ideas you have and give advice on.
Then think some more.
There is LOTS of really shitty tattoo 'art' out there, don't end up with something that has people trying to stifle their s****s at, or small children pointing at in the street and laughing at!
Make absolutely certain that it's going to be something you can live with for the rest of your life, getting it lasered off will be very expensive.
Electric Vintage in Bath have several very good artists who specialise, one does mostly monochrome, another does beautiful watercolour styles, check out their site.

I get where loddrick is coming from.

When I got my first tattoo it was when they were less socially acceptable...tattoos were kind of for the people on the fringes.

Me, it was because of the music/festival scene I was into.

Nowadays, it seems that people just go and 'get a sleeve' that looks like everyone else's. Almost like...I want a tattoo...any tattoo...It'll look good in the summer.

Not judging this btw, but I recognise that they have become more of an accessory than before.

Again, each of my (shit) tattoos mean something. They don't need to look good to anyone else, I don't really care.

I got a bog standard Celtic cross tattoo half my lifetime ago. Meant nothing other than wanting to be cool. Never ragretted it and forget it's even there 90% of the time.

Don't take it too seriously - no one's going to dig up your mummified body in 100 years time and pore over your pelt.

Hmm. Yes it's a very good reason to get one done. I have one that means a lot to me. But I would happily get one done just because I like it.

I don't think they have to have all these deep meanings to them. Just get one you like.

This is a really good book about tattooing in the '20s, it's fiction, but it gives a real flavour of the period.
Worth reading just for the story, but anyone with an interest in the art will possibly get something more from it.

Yeah, it does set them apart, I'm not at all certain how many offer such a service, but Electric Vintage is more than just one bloke or woman in a room. It may be because they're pretty close to the centre of Bath, not far from the college, and have greater footfall.
If I can get the money together I'll be getting my next two done by them, I already know exactly what I want, and again there's personal significance to them both.

I've been trying to come up with a design I like to cover a shit one I had 16 years ago, it's the worst kind - half arsed.

I'm reached the point now where I've gotten over all this meaningfulness thing, great if you can think of something, but sod it, I just want something I like the look of and hopefully won't look dated in 10 years. I thought about something bike related, but I don't like the look of them, kids names are too cliche for me and portraits are fraught with peril, good one look great, some look crap, some look horrific.

Been looking at that Mexican day of the dead stuff, love the look of it, but it screams 'dated' soon, I fear it'll be the 2020's version of Tribal bands.

Another recommendation for Sacred Art - Chorlton (I've got half a sleeve done here)

Grindhouse - Maccelesfield Kyle is churning some quality work

ThisMortalCoil - Altrincham some interesting artists

RAW tattoo - Kersley Aaron Raw is awesome, if you can get on his books!!

Rapture tattoos - Ash Higham, again if you can get on his books...

Don't worry about not having a clear idea what you want, any tattooist worth their weight can suggest and design pieces...see their work and enjoy the experience...hehe

Here's my tuppence worth:

If you are 'just' thinking about it don't bother. You really need to think it through. It's going be to be there the rest of your life (laser removal or cover up pending). Do some research, surf the web, there are millions of tatts out there. Find what you like the look of then develop it.

I thought about getting a tattoo for about, oh, 30 years but didn't really see/think of anything until I stumbled across a Dr Woo one that I liked. I then did a trawl of the local tatt parlour websites/Facebook pages until I found someone I felt I could trust and went to speak to them. We then developed a design together until I was happy with it. I then put my deposit down and waited then, at the last minute, I decided I wanted a part change in design then got it inked. It could only go in one place. And I love it, turned out better than I had hoped. And when I showed my 86 yo old mum (bless her, she died two weeks ago) she said "ooooo, l like that! I didn't think I was going to but I do!"

I'm now planning my next one. I know the basis, just got to work out exactly what/how I want it done. It will mark the passing of my mum and dad but will only be decipherable to a few people.

I'm just back from holiday were almost everyone had a tattoo of some sort - it was warm (Ibiza) so more noticeable as there wasn't a lot of clothing being worn. A couple were cool, most were cliched and some were dreadful. Subjective of course but i'm right 😛 Genuine Q to the tatted...How long does it take for the newly done piece take to turn into a blurry blob or is that a thing of the past with better inks equipment? Some of the older tats on display were very hard to make out and they were fairly basic designs (3 lions/loaves or deformed animals of some description 😆 )

Got my first one when my daughter was born , a sunrise over a mountain to represent dawn of a new life, at the top of my back. I then waited 15 years before my second of a Polynesian Tiki mask on my left shoulder. I then got my right calf done with a compass 2 years later at the age of 47. I never rushed in and knew exactly what I wanted. My compass came from an idea when I saw a basic design at the bottom of an old north west map of Scotland, I took that and added my own ideas around it. Now want my right shoulder done with something Inuit, after seeing them in Canada. F@&k stereotypes! Also, I had researched Glasgow artist who specialised in the particular genre, and went to them.

P-Jay - get at least a couple of laser sessions on the old one 6 months apart. It'll open up a ton of options for new work.

OP - go to an experienced artist whose been doing it a long time (or younger talent being mentored). A tattoo can look great leaving the shop and look shit 5-10 years later If not done right.

Euro - combination of ink, how it's applied and whether the canvas is looked after. Wear sunscreen

Listen to metalheart, he knows what he's talking about.
There again, I didn't put anywhere near as much consideration into my unit stamp or shit tat (done when I was 15) and I have no regrets. Far from getting the shit one removed, I'd sooner it be covered by a larger one.

+1 on checking out artists work and seeing who's work you like and think would compliment the style u have in mind. Quite a few good artists in Mcr, tho many more shit ones. Also worth meeting them if its likely to be a multi session piece, lots of objectionable egos in that world and you might not want to spend hours and hours being hurt by them!

I'm having a full leg piece done by Hannah Mosley at Middleton tattoo studio, really love the design she drew for me.

on holiday at the bar I spied a tattoo on the bar girl's arm, a circle within a triangle. Thinking it was the symbol for the illumanti I asked her if she was a conspiracy theorist? No she replied, Harry Potter, that's the deathly hallows.

Only tattoos I've ever considered were getting my entire lower leg as a settling pint of Guinness (wrap-around), or a tattoo of Roberto, the crazy robot from Futurama that is obsessed with stabbing.
Both of these have great meaning to me as I am a mental Guinness swilling alcoholic that has an obsession with stabbing.

I'm sure either would be a bad idea, but I work in a pub opposite a tattoo parlour so it's probably only a matter of time.

Wanted a tattoo for ages, but I have a rule.
Whenever I come up with an image I like, I give it a year to see if I still fancy it before committing.

Nothing's stuck yet.

Currently, something stained glass and Art Deco-ish is favourite, along the lines of:
[img] [/img]

If anyone knows an artist who's good at that type of stuff, I'd be very grateful for any details.

Like this too:

I've taken a good look through all of the suggested artists and have sent messages to a couple with my design ideas. There are these guys who are local to me Underwood Tattoos would anyone in the know mind looking at some of their work please? They look good to me but obviously I don't know much!

Not going to rush into this and quite happy to wait if the person I want is booked up for a few months.

As everyone has said dont rush in and find an artist you can trust and who's style you like. If you like a design look at it everyday for a few months. Or set it as a background on your phone or laptop. You might think its the dogs danglys for a week or so but tattoos dont last for just a week.
Ive got 2 Japanese style sleeves and people do sometimes stare at your tattoo, some people compliment them, some people hate them. Makes no real odds to me at work as i don't deal with the public at all and wear overalls all day.
Also think about if something is super detailed now it wont look as detailed when all the lines start to blur.
Its also very addictive and you wont just get one.

Why not draw on some designs with felt tips and wear them for a couple of weeks. See if you really like them and gauge others reactions?!

The problem with this method is that the anti tattoo brigade are more likely to vocalise their narrowminded lack of understanding and ignorance while the pro tattoo brigade will nod in a quiet sage like manner at the style, but not the execution.
Know what I mean?

Tattoos?
Not for me, but mainly because with my skin / freckles / moles it'd look like join-the-dots.

On other people, I've seen some fantastic arty stuff that I suspect gets boring after a year or two, I've seen some what were they thinking stuff, and I've seen some timeless stuff that just looks like part of who the person is.

If I could have the last sort and it didn't look like join-the-dots then maybe, just maybe.

I haven't got a clue on a design

I've not read the whole thread. Getting my first one took years. The design came first, and spent a long time getting drawn and redrawn (I draw - not brilliantly, but well enough to show someone else what I want). I've had two more since, including a full back. Those have taken less time, but even so I am not letting anyone draw just something into my skin unless I definitely like what they're actually drawing.

The lad who did my back will take a deposit and will draw a design for me which he won't be bothered at all if I don't go through with (as long as I don't take it to someone else local). I'm busy working up a design at the moment. If I decide I want it, I'll pay him to make it perfect, and then we'll see about getting it inked in.

I'm not judging anyone else's process for this stuff, but that's how I go about it. And I'm completely free of regret about any of mine.

🙂

Does a tattoo really have to have any special personal meaning? If its something you like the look of then surely that's a good enough reason to get one?

FWIW I never thought about a tattoo until 2 years ago, aged 53, when we were talking images in the pub. I had a very strong image appear and thought it would make a great tatt. It now adorns my right calf, clichéd I know, but I like it and everyone else can take a running jump.

Never thought about it until the image came though, I agree with the take your time approach and be sure about the artist.

Your hair grows, you can change your hairs style.
You can wear different clothes every day....some people do!
Make up..see hairstyle.

I think the reason tattoos get special treatment is because they are permanent and people struggle to cope with the idea of putting a picture on yourself when you are 20, that you will still like when you're 60. Plus....(and don't judge me here ) a lot of people with tats are definitely short of a few brain cells!

Why don't you get your full arse done like ooor Cheryl?

Her arse?

I presume so.

Difficult to imagine her going to the Tattoo Fixers, as all they do is turn shite little tattoos into shite big tattoos. And she's pushing the boundaries there already

There's a chap in the gym I go to who has a whole sleeve just tattooed solid in that unique tattoo colour which is somewhere between blank and dark blue.....

Either that or he dunked his arm into a vat of denim dye, whilst wearing a glove....

Just get My First Tattoo inked on your shoulder...saves explaining what it meant to you at the time and sounding all deep and meaningful when really you just wanted a tat...

How about a dolphin? Or a bicycle?

Or a dolphin riding a bicycle?

That would be nice.

Your hair grows, you can change your hairs style.
You can wear different clothes every day....some people do!
Make up..see hairstyle.

Won't stop people being judgemental though. It's a point of being judgemental not longevity of a particular look.
There was a fella on here who would go apoplectic in his hatred of tattoos. 😆
I felt for the guy.

He's living in the wrong century then, I must be the only person without one at my gym (CF box).

we're all cyclists so get the tattoo somewhere you won't scratch it when crashing. I got a tattoo just above my ankle/sock line and nothing has touched it yet. The shoulder is known to take the hit you don't reach out with your hands first

Got my first one done over the winter. Over 50 now and dgas what people think.

I wanted something that looked 'traditional' (like I remembered from growing up in the 1970's) and always liked dragons so I now have:

3 months since it was finished and I still like it.

Does show under a shirt cuff ofe I extend my arm but I do think attitudes to tattoos agent what they were.

You realise this is a thread bumped by spam?

Either that or it's been dug up from 9 months ago by someone who really thinks the OP should get a girlie flower.
