You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
We've had aeroplane and flying boat threads but I have to admit I'm quite partial to a good old MBT, I had the good fortune to have a play with Leopards in Singapore and must admit, If I was 8 years old there would be a poster on of one on my bedroom wall.
Two goldfish in a tank. One says to the other: "How do you drive this thing?"
You're welcome.

There was a strange tension in the air. Our O.P. had spotted concentrations of vehicle borne Infantry and Mark III German tanks moving left behind the cover of Grandstand Hill.
In burst Dawson. “Come on,” he said. “There’s ****ing Germans on the other side of this hill and nothing in between them and us! I want you, you, you, you and you,” his finger stabbed in the directions of the victims. “Small Arms, outside now,” and he was gone. Led by Major Chater Jack, the party climbed Grandstand Hill. We at the G.P. got straffed by a lone ME 109. “The bastard,” I said. “Get his number, we’ll report him for wilful damage.”
‘Geordie’ Liddel replied on the Bren gun, but was miles out.
“You’re a good shit-house orderly but a lousy shot,” we shouted. How Liddel complained about our references to his humble job. “It may be shit to you, but to me it’s bread and butter,” he said. As darkness fell, the O.P. reported a German patrol had ‘winkled out’ a Gunner O.P. to their right. Chater ‘advised’ our O.P. to withdraw half a mile and go back at first light. A listening post-cum-O.P. was placed forward of our guns. We had a report that ‘Tiger’ tanks were in our area, they weighed 90 tons. How in Christ could we stop them! “Simple,” I said. I held up my hand. “Tiger Tanks—Stop.”
Cokie, Spencer was a tender engine based on a Gresley A4, not a tank engine.
You're welcome
Hunted turned hunter; Firefly, British upgrade of the standard Sherman, with a chuffin' great gun added! It's the M4A4 medium tank with a 76mm gun, a very effective Panzer killer:
You want a heavy tank, this is a heavy tank!
The Tortoise, 79 tons, 33ft long, 13ft wide, 9ft 10ins tall, carried a 94mm, 32 pounder gun!
Powered by a RR Meteor V12 producing 600hp.
Only six were ever built.
Quite as few of my workmates seem to be clocking up hundreds of hours on war thunder.
Love the S-tank, also love the Chieftain MBT 🙂 .

warpope mobile is for sale
Firefly was an amazing Tiger killer, trouble was when they got close enough to shoot first.
There was a reason the sherman was called the 'Tommy cooker'
You're all officially weird. Although now have actually seen a waropopemobile I'm seriously cracking.

Me too. Always loved them.
My dad served in the Royal Tank Regiment in the post war 1940's and had some good stories about British tanks particularly during his time training at Bovington Camp in Dorset
He cut his top lip whilst commanding a Churchill tank and going over a ridge.
He also had a soft spot for the Honey tank (M3 Stuart) as it was small and relatively fast so good fun.
He also was familiar with the Centurion
and Conqueror tank which was pretty luxuroius for the crew (as tanks go).
Thanks op - brought back some nice memories of my dad
during the 2003 invasion of iraqs there are reports of a challenger 2 being hit by 14 rpg and a milan missile after it shed a track and ended up reversing into a ditch, it was back in operation 6 hour later after repairs and another reported 70 rpg hits.
In fact, this one would probably punch holes in the Tiger you've posted up, and it's a Skoda!
I think that's a Panther not a Tiger .
I think that's a Panther not a Tiger .
Correct
I nearly broke a challenger 2 when I was an army cadet!
We were on a residential with 2RTR in Fallingbostel and out on exercise when the chance to have a go at driving one came up and I jumped at it! The captain put the barrel out to one side at 90 degrees to the direction of drive so that he could stand next to the drivers pit and give me instructions.
I drove forward until an almighty STOP! was yelled through the headset. Turns out if you hang the barrel up on a large tree they can bend a bit.... ah well, good lesson in spatial awareness.
Might be the last time they let a cadet have a go at driving one...
When they drove it over a wreck of a car to show off in the yard it was properly scary. It didn't so much drive over the car as just make the car thin enough that it didn't have to go over. Mental. Great trip that.

the 17 pounder in the firefly was a very effective weapon when it fired the discarding sabot round introduced in september 44, meant it was a match for the long barreled 88 in the king tiger and Jagdpanther and much better penetration than the long barreled 75mm in the panther. The trouble for the british only 1 in 5 tanks in a platoon was a firefly and the Germans would target them.

About half the history of British tanks in WWII is made up of the various attempts to get the 17 pounder to fit into one...

They attempted to fit it into a cruiser tank, called the Challenger, but that didn't work. The cruisers were just too small to fit it.[/*]

They attempted to fit it into an infantry tank, called the Black Prince, but that didn't work. It was basically a scaled up Churchill, but the only thing they didn't make bigger was its engine and the Churchill was already a slow tank.[/*]

They modified the Valentine into a tank destroyer called the Archer, but they had to fit it backwards to get it to fit! Though this made falling back from ambush positions really easy. :-)[/*]

The Sherman Firefly was pretty good but they had to fit the gun on its side, get rid of one crewman and add a big box to the back of the turret to get it to fit.[/*]

It worked fairly well in the Achilles, but that was another tank destroyer (based on the Sherman) and had an open top turret.[/*]

They accepted that the cruiser tanks needed to be bigger, while also cutting down the 17 pounder and came up with the Comet. At that point they were nearly there, but very few were in service before the war ended.[/*]

By increasing the size of a cruiser tank giving it decent armour and working out how to arm it will a full fat 17 pounder, the Centurion tank was invented, and by accident the MBT. By that point the UK had the best tank in the world, but the war had ended. Oh well.[/*]
I must admit to having a soft spot for these machines. I think that anyone with both a passing interest in modern tanks and a Kindle should have a read of Chieftains and Team Yankee.
Tigers you say? "Shoot it in the ass!"
[Fairly sweary so possibly not NSFW]
The free to play video game World of Tanks is lots of fun. It's not hugely realistic, except visually, but entertaining especially for someone who was Ww2 nerd as a kid.
No love for the Challenger 2?
Here's some Challenger 2 love. I helped with the filming of the Challenger 2 segments of this(fast forward to 10:34)
My father was a trooper in the Lothians & Borders Horse Yeomanry during WW2 - an armoured regiment, part of the 6th Armoured Division. I never got to talk to him about his war exploits (he died when I was 11) but after reading the regiment war diary he must have been involved in some frantic battles - Kasserine Pass, Monte Cassino, Argenta Gap. The thing that struck me was the attrition rate of the Sherman. If it wasn't for American/Canadian industrial might we would never have won.
If it wasn't for American/Canadian industrial might [s]we would never have won[/s] the russians would have won.
FIFY
it's worth remembering 80% of all german armoured units were deployed on the eastern front.
