I may/think I might be getting one of these for Xmas and I seem to recall that there are some minor mods that are best/easiest done while building rather than retro fit? Bearings etc.
Yes, the Tamiya thread may contain the answers but I scroll through and get upset by the sheer quality of some of the paint jobs, knowing mine is likely to look less awesome.
Any suggestions, without going full “modded” for now?
Bearings! Get a metal bearing kit, the eBay ones are fine in my experience, much better than the plastic ones supplied. I wouldn't bother with anything else tbh, wait until you start to break stuff after it's built then you'll know what you need.
Bearings and gears are the main ones, and possibly steering linkage. But most things are relatively easy to replace the next time you take it apart. But you'll be taking it apart again soon anyway... 😉

I haven't got one of these but if it comes without I think I'd buy oil dampers at the outset as well as bearings. Folk often start with a steel pinion as well because apparently aluminium ones affect longevity elsewhere in the gearbox, and a pinion is cheap. Have fun! What body shell?
The two things that made the biggest difference to my TT02 was bearings and oil shocks. The rest you can sort out as it breaks or wears out.
Why did you post this?
I'd completely forgotten about these things but now I'm trying to choose between a 2 door Impreza and a 98 Escort Cossy.
Audi Quattro, eek.
Bearings. Ebay ones fine ime. Maybe an uprated pinion, and the steering.
Oil shocks are worth doing, but they are easy done later.
Re paint. Follow the instructions to the letter, pick a nice colour.
Magnetic body mounts save drilling holes in your expensive body.
Modern 2.4g radio sets don’t suffer from interference like older am or fm sets did, they also have tiny aerials, which means you don’t have to drill holes in your expensive body.
Decent modelling scissors make cutting the body accurately a LOT easier. I got tamiya ones for about a tenner. You don’t wanna **** up your expensive body.
I’ve bought oil shocks off ebay, and bearings.
Uprated motor, radio, tyres etc from amazon.
I never buy the cheapest. Usually 2nd/3rd cheapest.
