(Duracell, I’m looking at you)
Though Tally Ho has nearly 10x the number of subscribers and is a bit more clued up donation wise it would seem. Plus many of the helpers are in the boat industry so they'll have friends and contacts that help/kit can be sourced from.
The big point though is Duracell has a cat and Tally Ho only had the loan of a mangy parrot.
No, Tally Ho had access to dogs early on, hence 10x the number of subscribers 😁
I don't think the Duracell couple are as natural in front of the camera has Leo and his crew have become, plus...how much fibreglass grinding do you need to see?!
How very dare you call Poncho mangy, utterly offended.

TBF, Leo has looked quite mangy at times. 😉
I'm still really enjoying this build. It just feels like they are maintaining energy and we move ever closer to a wet bottom....
we move ever closer to a wet bottom….
Curiously aroused!

Someone's paying for the mast work (if it comes off) that surprised me.

Ooer, missus! Of course what you do in the privacy of your own home, etc, etc… 🤓
Fair play to him for not revealing the company who messed him about on those fuel tanks, although perhaps there will be a leak of that kind too.
Pretty shocking how badly made they were to leak like that.
Those ally tanks are a thing of beauty 😍
Be quite interesting to see how they make those giant alloo-minum catamarans too.
I was gutted to not be able to make the open-house thing at the wooden boat festival the other month. Maybe next year she will be in the water!
I've really enjoyed the series - now we just need to get some more Project Binky content.
Oh that was a lovely episode, he looked so happy. The plastic tanks were so shonky that when you eventually see the aluminium tanks it's a real wow moment. They look incredible and are clearly in another league. Getting them for the price of the materials alone is a real bargain as it took proper skills and tools to make them. That was a real joy to watch
And the line "My name is Lauren, I'm a boatbuilder but not a sailor" was just brilliant
I loved all of it, but was most taken by Lauren's T shirt.
Really good of him to offer to make the tanks - and a fine job he seems to have made of it, too - and well done to his employer for supporting it. It's all too easy for companies to say no to this sort of thing.
Kudos to Leo for staying classy regarding the company that stiffed him on the plastic tanks.
an evening with leo
Now that's really looking fine!
Please can I also bet: a wet bottom by June?
Good episode. I hope they're leaving the bulwarks varnished and not painted, I like the contrasts and it matches the transom.
I started watching the Duracell project after a mention up above: Anyone else following? And more importantly - anyone else wondering about the amount of 'structural' things being removed?
Latest chop job:
You should maybe start a separate thread.
Though I'd like to thank you as your post has put me in mind of maybe breaking my cycle of depression and I'm thinking I should pop down to the large boat yard on the Clyde and maybe look to see if anyone is needing any help renovating their wooden boat. I've woodworking tools and machinery so would likely be an asset to someone.
And more importantly – anyone else wondering about the amount of ‘structural’ things being removed?
Yep...this has puzzled me too. And weight added/removed...tho apparently he is weighing everything and has a naval architect advising him. I have visions of it being launched and sitting there with the bow underwater. Also I can't see how they're going to end up with a nice smooth finish inside with fibreglass?
It doesn't need a separate thread as there's not enough to talk about and admire....i watch it more with a grim fascination.
I'm missing Pete 😐
I'm interested to see how the removable cockpit is sealed
early today, with some very strange in vid ad 🤔
Whoop, front door time 😉
Woo-hoo!
Glad to see he's keeping the tradition alive.
😜
Very excellent. Beautiful work
"how do you feel about making the front door?"
"Well, honestly, when you asked me, I thought you were joking...it's the thing that makes you want to be a boat builder... I'm stoked"
Loved that line. Also noticed the practise caulking was done on the mock up they chainsawed the opening in to 🙂
Makes you wonder how much you can make from 450k subscribers, some advert revenue and a few patreons.
I keep wondering what he will do whens he finishes? Looked like a lot of staff which means it will get finished sooner.
I hope he sails it round the world and doesn't just buy another rotten boat and cash in.
How shit is that
DEVASTATING BOATYARD FIRE / UNDERFALL YARD, BRISTOL
13 years ago I started my career as a boatbuilder when I wandered into the iconic Underfall Yard in Bristol and spoke to John RB, who offered me an informal apprenticeship. The photo shows me helping to step the mast on the first boat I helped to build, Edith Grey.
A few nights ago, this same building was set alight by an arsonist, causing a devastating fire that destroyed several businesses, historic buildings, wooden boats, and collections of irreplaceable tools, including those of my first boatbuilding mentor, John RB.
Underfall yard is one of the last undeveloped areas of Bristol docks, is maintained by a charity, and is usually open for the public to walk through. It is a beloved part of the city, and although the community is reeling and devastated, they have pledged to rebuild the yard and continue to build boats here.
If you want to help, there is a fundraiser to try and replace some of the destroyed tools. They are not asking for a lot, and I think this community can really help! The link to the fundraiser is in my bio.
You can also donate to the UNDERFALL YARD TRUST by searching for them online.

however much it is, Leo has earned every cent!
Years of hard effort, investment in local people & businesses, and hundreds of entertaining videos documenting it all.
Makes you wonder how much you can make from 450k subscribers, some advert revenue and a few patreons.
well he has more than a few patreons! Google seems to suggest 5000+ !!! Each paying at least $2 per video (and a lot of tiers so some paying a lot more. Even after taking off patreons cut that looks like more that $10K per video.
You don’t earn money directly for the number of subscribers on YouTube, but rather from the ads people watch when your videos play (or a share of premium fees for those dodging ads). YouTube revenues are a bit of an enigma to understand but a channel like his could probably be making $3 per 1000 watches. He’s getting 400K+ views per video so is earning over $1000 per video from youtube.
not sure if he has Insta etc too - so could be more £ in total
Given the costs of the project that’s probably not quite as huge as it sounds.
he's got 3 or 4 full time staff now doesn't he? So with staff costs, taxes, materials and rental I don't think he is raking it in. It's clearly a labour of love and fantastic to watch.
Sampson Boat Co might well be doing commissioned work we don't see. (the bespoke door seg has the wiff of a promo)
Great last video.
Boatbuilding crosses dot watching!
Just looked through the fleet and Patrick is Duchess of Desire (currently 20th) and Leo is Tally Row (86th). Not sure if there are different classes as the positions seem to be mixed up a little, and there are loads of different style boat icons.

Brilliant!
Some excerpts from 'About The Race'. Sounds like a singlespeed event!

That's brilliant - thanks for posting!
Patrick finished #17 at 10:15am Sat
Leo finished #56 at 8:43pm Sat.
Didn't expect Leo to do so well considering he was rowing Tally Ho's nested dinghy, not exactly designed for long distance! Hopefully the race will feature in the next episode.
The capstan vid was interesting but I felt a bit uncomfortable with them putting some much oomph into the presses to free the cap but with zero eye protection. They are clearly very experienced but it felt a bit weird. Glad they got it disassembled though
seventy48 is fantastic. We need more events with a rule 8
To me the sound isnt matching the vid. Best example is at 10:21. He's using a hand plane, stops, but the sound carries on 😕
Just finished watching that. Goodness but it's starting to really look beautiful
I can't help feeling there's much less effort going into the latest videos. Really hard to work out where they've got to now....i know that's probably cos there's so much going on at once, but we dont seem to get an up to date overall picture anymore
dont seem to get an up to date overall picture anymore
He's trying to put all the process into one video. So this one had all the galley kitchen which took over a year from start to finish.
I also suspect Leo's time is spent mainly organising, ordering materials etc.
I haven't noticed a reduction in quality although I preferred the renovation part at the start over the first fittings stage.
would be nice to see a catch up with Pete see what he's upto.
On a related tangent I had a few days recently sailing round Scottish islands with Luke Powell on Pellew, as featured in several early Tally Ho episodes, and it was completely awesome.

Pelllew looks lovely. Not dissimilar to a 110 yr old ketch cutter I sailed on a number of years back, although it was a good bit smaller.
I've sailed modern yachts and the difference on the hands between modern ropes and traditional ones means gloves are a godsend.
she's for sale if you have a spare £695000 under the bed.
she's quite a bit more spacious than tally ho

£695000
And the same again in running costs!
What's that saying - sailing is like standing in a cold shower tearing up £50 notes....?
And the same again in running costs!
and the rest 🙂 interesting that Pellew has water tight bulkheads and doors is that something to do with having "paying" crew ?
What’s that saying – sailing is like standing in a cold shower tearing up £50 notes….?
The saying is actually 20 pound notes, but i guess with current inflation levels thats not far off it.
The saying is actually 20 pound notes, but i guess with current inflation levels thats not far off it.
I'm sure the first time I heard it was from Lester Noble (Orange MTB founder) as he showed a few of us his new International Canoe avec da carbonz and glued mylar sails...
I'm actually wrong. I knew it was some politician who originally said it and it was Ted Heath, and it was £5 notes. Shows how far back it was when five pound noted were considered a lot of money.
I used it in conversation at a regatta and it was later mentioned on the news from the reporter who was at the same table.
think this ol' lady is pretty "tally ho esque" though she pre dates tally ho she certainly been better cared for. She carries a lot of sail for her size so i imagine she's fun and a handful 😉 She probably in the standing in the shower tearing up £10 notes range 😉 If mother pop her clogs tomorrow I'd be sorely tempted 🙂

Nice with all the sails up. Gaff topsail too.We had a topsail but didnt really put it up due to the strain on the rig, only ever in the lightest of winds. I seem to remember though theres was another topsail type. Cant remember what Tony(owner) called it. It was flown higher than the normal gaff topsail.
He also fitted himself a yard for downwind. and I swear we looked like some sort of pirate ship 😆
.
No idea what became of the yacht. Tony was RN and retired as a commander down to I think Falmouth 😕 where his family were from. Its a recognizable boat. Has a self steer instead of a mizzen fitted for longer voyages.
I've looked for it but cant find even so much as a picture, but a lovely traditional boat all the same.
Vid of Pellew

£50's is for off-shore/round the world racing in big boats
