Presumably there would be a not-inconsiderable weight increase due to water absorption by the caulking and timbers on a boat that size after a period in the water. I guess that's one of the reasons for the removable internal ballast?
What a difference between attempt 1 and 2.
I kept thinking they were too close and that if anything went wrong they were going to get hot toes (except no feet Pete)
Brilliant episode. It's coming along now isn't it.
I think attempt two is what happens when you think attempt one is something you can do without professional help 😆
Coming along indeed. But theres still the i9nternal fitting out, then the deck, helm position, and all the rigging to do. I'm guessing it will still be a work in progress this time next year.
Plus the chap(Leo) is a complete perfectionist. Which adds to the planning to get everything spot on.
Be nice to see it finally go in the water though.
So I’m doing a second re-watch. Just got to #38, with the finger incident.
YouTube served up a stihl chainsaw ad; relevant, but a but close to home! (Though I still think it must have been the bandsaw.)
I kept thinking they were too close and that if anything went wrong they were going to get hot toes
The one thing I kept thinking was I'd want some eye protection. Good to see it go so well, it's been a fantastic thing to follow. I think he gets the balance of showing us stuff and explaining things spot on and the supporting cast are great.
keel fitting
The bit with the chainsaw near his feet/legs gave me the heebie-geebies
The bit with the chainsaw near his feet/legs gave me the heebie-geebies
Yeah, think I’d give Pete that job to do
I love the use of power tools on lead...cutting the tenon 😁
leo time
Just getting into this, about a quarter of the way through. Bloody excellent. Some of the chainsaw use freaks me out though, pretty lax with health and safety with the power tools.
I understand the reasons for moving, even without the legal hassles it made sense but its lost some of it's "charm" (and Pancho). I'm also a bit uneasy with paid and unpaid thing going on :/

Linky? Or is this a Patreon thing?
Edit: ah, looks like it is on YouTub (stw version)
it's just live on utube... the video is now up
Just watching the latest, in quiet awe at the level of craftsmanship as usual.
I’m also a bit uneasy with paid and unpaid thing going on :/
Would you mind explaining this? It's an interesting mix of people; pros and volunteers/apprentices is my take on it.
Sometimes these are just a nice 30mins escape from all the rest of the shit going on. Kind of liking Rowan's understated ability to just keep getting stuff done. Loving some of the tools he has now as well.
I've come to this late - looks like a fab project, but I'm never going to be able to catch up with all 125 episodes!
Any especially good ones you'd recommend?
I already watched ep100 which was a good recap.
Just start at episode 1 and take your time - should be on youtube for years.
It is worth starting from the beginning, some of the episodes are not as long.
If you really don't want to watch all of it, I would recommend seeking out his first trip back to the UK where he meets the owners/builders of the Blue River Table
as there will probably be references to that in his forthcoming episode about his recent trip back
What a fascinating little insight into the work of the marine architect 🙂
Finally!
I'm up to date on the videos and can read this thread! 😊
I absolutely love what Leo is doing. There is something so soulful in it that I need to get more of in what I do.
It's such an enormously positive project in every way.
Agreed. Really much more than just a boat project.
And it's looking stunningy already...
It does.
The dedication he has to doing absolutely everything the right way down to the smallest bolt or plank is amazing.
The deck is beautiful. Work of art.
Get in, ill watch that after tea
slightly larger version of Tally ho
Think Leo may have his work cut out singlehanded in Tally ho 😀
/a>
I've done some sailing on one of those, though not as long. I think including bowsprit is was about 50'(that one is 73'. So maybe 40-42, i forget. Same age, 1880 ketch cutter. Lovely boat.
We even had a yard set up for downwind sailing. We looked quite the pirate vessel 😆
One thing it differs from to regular sailing yachts is the ropes. on modern its thin lines and they're easy to handle, on these old boats its bloody thick hemp types and its murder on the hands.
on these old boats its bloody thick hemp types and its murder on the hands.
especially without a winch!
you watch one pilot cutter video, and what happens you get sent a video of one for sale ! 😀
some local flavour 🙂
Beat me to it. It's starting to look really beautiful
Just stunning...
The attention to detail is amazing.
Absolutely beautiful work.
Everything fits so well.
Seeing that the new boy is....ahem, a little more mature then the others I wonder how he copes physically. Going on and off a boat all day and getting yourself into small spaces is so hard on the body. I can barely walk after a day on site doing similar 😂
Love seeing that they use a similar method for templating the deck boards as I've been using recently.

Tally Ho - renovating a 112 year old sailing yacht.
It was 107 years old when he started 😆
Yeah, but he will still finish before Project Binky....
it's that time again
running late this weekend as he's sharpening his tools!

I watched them when they first started posting, but couldn’t see past them being clueless amateurs. This might be endearing to some, but wasn’t my preferred form of entertainment, so I unsubscribed and stopped watching.
Ymmv
(I still think it will end in tears - I do watch ‘Acorn to Arabella’)
Also worth looking at the Duracell Project. It's a far more modern boat (although 30 odd years old), so the construction techniques are very different. I'm in the middle of rebuilding a John Claridge Europe dinghy at the moment, so subscribed to look at how modern boatbuilders use vaccuum bagging to get light, strong parts, and how new stuff could be fitted into older hulls:
Handtool rescue "Oi that's my thang!"
That Tormek sharpener has found me looking longingly at the pro kitchen knife machine. I have a 0 birthday this year and have requested one. I was told that's for pro kitchens, early retirement beckons so that one was shot down quickly. 🙂
The Tormek one is really expensive, they start at about £400. Though the this basic one, the T4 is pretty much identical to others on the market costing far less.
A Record Power version(8" wheel) will cost you £170, others like Triton-£250, Scheppach Tiger -£140.
The RP one has a host of free bits, dressing stone etc and is probably the best deal overall.
As always, I'm amazed at the craftsmanship, even when working with a bit of old plywood 😂
think Leo is being a tad naive showing off those batteries that's @ least £35,000 worth!
So, what happened to Pete then? It is an amazing project but you have to have incredible drive to keep going at that level of detail for all those years
I imagine the level of detail and knowledge that Pete has shown on the project has enabled him to have an endless amount of work offers that will pay much more than Leo can offer him.
Ah,now that would make a lot of sense. He does seem to just get stuff done and be super knowledgeable
I wonder how much its cost him thus far. I mean thats a shit load of big timbers, plus all the bits, fancy engine and the like. What do we reckon ? 1/4 million or thereabouts
Probably worth upwards of half a million if he finishes it Pellew appeared in one of the earlier episodes btw.
What happened to the guy sort of mid way back with the dog that made the tables for doing the ribs?
some escape from the Saxe-Coburg soap
Thread diversion: carlrogers on youtube (not the psychotherapist) is good. His dad and he built a roof and a staircase in oak (and a Vespa scooter, not in oak). Only a few videos, but very watchable /Thread diversion
(1) Tally Ho's remarkable new sailing dingy - YouTube
Worth it just for when he pulls the tender out of the back of his truck. It's a beautiful thing
the other end of the wood epoxy yacht building by Spirit
I posted that one up a while ago(the 111). Majority of the sailing forumites didnt like it.
The 30 looks interesting
the tech is just amazing when you compare the frames/stringer size and spacing between Tally ho and a Spirit yacht!

the tanks did look super shonky really. it must have been horrible to test them and see those leaks 🙁
think he's over thinking it on the capacity, in reality he could probably get away with half as much fuel, then he could have steel tanks and not worry about the weight (didn't tally ho originally sail the pacific with next to no fuel ?) besides if runs out of fuel he can tow Tally Ho in his new tender Master and Commander style 😉
I watched that thinking "would I have pressure tested them?"...not sure I would.
I stopped listening at the end...what are the replacements going to be made of?

He hasn't decided and is asking for any viewers who have advice or experience
I watched that thinking “would I have pressure tested them?”…not sure I would
You might not have normally but the quality did look a bit dodgy and I'm guessing that is what made him do it. Especially the huge blobs of sealant round some of the fixings and the quality of the threading
True...they did look pretty shonky....but I think he's such a perfectionist he'd have tested them even if they'd looked perfect!
Leo is pulling "the dog ate my homework" excuse.... he's going with power outage and copyright nonsemse 😉
Flogging knives now...
Missing Pete too!
Flogging knives now…
I reckon his bills must be horrific, and any sponsorship is good sponsorship.
I do wonder though at the beginning when it was spend, spend, spend if theres not a bit of regret and being a tad more frugal might have been better
The sills are beautiful. It's going to look incredible when it's finished
at the beginning when it was spend, spend, spend
He doesn't exactly seem to be cutting back now....you don't need a freezer in a boat. But I don't begrudge him anything....he's found a way to monetise the restoration, whether that be donations or sponsorship...good for him. And his videos are way way better than some other boat restoration stuff out there (Duracell, I'm looking at you)
