I'll likely have 2 nights there this summer and wondered if I could pick some a few brains.
The important bit is simply where to stay, not necessarily specific hotels more an idea of which areas.
Bar that, what to see, what to do, what not to miss, etc.
Thanks all.
what not to miss, etc.
Couple of blokes I think...
IGMC
Went with my wife last September for a long weekend. Loved it.
Presumably you're flying: there's a very easy coach connection to the Verona rail station, from which it's a 30 minute walk or short taxi.
If you can, take in a show at the Arena - it's an amazing venue.
Stay central - you can walk everywhere. We stayed here http://www.bbartandbreakfast.it/
There is so much to do and see - I think just point yourself at Tripadvisor. We enjoyed just ambling around and taking in whatever we came across.
You can't go wrong on food - restaurants adjacent to the Arena are a bit touristy and very busy. But the back streets are full of alternatives. Again Tripadvisor is a good start.
For our last day, we went back to the airport and hired a car to make a trip up to Lake Garda and back through the mountains.

We're doing it the other way round, 5 days on the lake then 2 in the City, i'm looking forward to it.
Talk to me about...Verona
It's not my favourite Elvis Costello record. I liked Olivers Army. 😉
one day is enough to see the best of Verona, iiwy on the other day get the train to Venice!
stay away from Juliet's grave (in Verona) , big tourist rip off.
took me a bit pp but like it 🙂
Last bump before I go and boom something.
Stay central and go to the opera at the arena as previously said. Kind of covers it really. Loads of hotels near the arena. Pick one.
Ah Verona! Used to have a site there and I've been a few times. We stayed in an apartment right in the centre last year near the supermarket/converted factory garage. Worked out the same per night as a hotel with two rooms and so much more convenient.
It's all lovely, the Roman museum across the river is good, walking the main shopping street of an evening before dinner. Climb the tower. And you have to go to the Opera if you get the chance. Take the iPad and a translation of the score and just enjoy the spectacle.
Did I say go to the opera?
You can bus/drive up to Lake Garda too if you fancy. Verona is MUCH nicer than Venice (took them their first before Verona).
For those that don't know, the verona opera festival is world famous, runs all summer and held in the roman amphitheatre. My two teens loved Romeo and Juliet.
The palace of Juliet has been restored too. No more chewing gum decor. It's busy, full of tourists (of course) but not so bad really.
Some great restaurants in the grand piazza too.
warning about the opera - the stone seating is only comfortable for 20 minutes for anyone over 5ft particularly if you have arthritic knees. 🙂
Verona is lovely ,the old city at least, but I'd agree that a day is probably enough to get a feel of the city unless you really want to see the opera in the ampitheatre. It's only a 40min drive from the sth end of the Garda Lake. Take note that the weather can be quite hot and humid in August in that part of Italy and my kids always wanted the option to jump in the lake at the end of the day to cool off.
Stay in garda. We did day trip with opera at night. Saw everything we wanted too. That way you are in garda when you wake up...
