Got a workshop that is away from the house that currently runs on mains electricity from the house.
In the workshop I've got:
Led panel lights
A bench grinder
Pillar drill (rarely use)
Radio
Ebike charger
The roof is flat.
I'd like to use solar if possible to power the workshop including a heating source.
Is it feasible? What would I need? Or am I being stupid?? Location wise is spot on with no discernible shadows
Aren’t you better having a solar array + battery and feeding the surplus to the house?
A heating source? Evenings from October to March when you will most need the heating will not be sunny.
If it is already on the mains I would leave it. As suggested above any solar outlay would be better as a standard set up feedinmg the house with the excess going to the grid.
Someone more knowledgeable than me couldsay whether the workshop is a viable location rather than the usual house roof. Might need more cable through the garden to the house?
What would I need
including a heating source.
For anything like useful heat at times when you'll want to heat it - £15-20k
Take away the heating source could probably do most of it on aux 12 v circuits barring the bench grinder and pillar drill for about 6-800 quid. With a 12v set up and a few leisure batteries.
Then in winter you'll need your mains power anyway as you'll have minimal solar input so you'd still have your 240v circuits there to run the heating and heavy start up current items (drill and grinder)
I've just put solar on one of our new builds. I think its 2.5kw peak. In full winter sun its doing 1kw, today when its overcast its down to 90-100 watts.
While I was looking for standard mains connected solar panels I can across this place which seems to specialise in off grid kits for everything from sheds to middle of nowhere housing.
Might help work out what you need and likely costs.
