Things are opening, i'm getting out and about and have had the quick realisation that i have very few clothes!

It has been decided that i need some new shirts and honestly have no idea where to buy nice shirts from!! Google is a minefield!

I'm looking for something causal, fitted can be tucked in or left out...good material etc

Help...i have a couple of functions to attend and i look like im ready for the 90's!! 😀

Dont you have someone who does that for you?

I have not been allowed to buy (choose) my own clothes for 35 years.

This is probably a good thing...

Charles Twyrrt for formal shirts, Crew for casual. Perfect middle class shopping, but try to avoid Next cufflinks or a Hugo Boss watch.

H&M, go slim fit. They won’t last forever but they’ll do the job inn the short term.

TM Lewin, Duchamp and John Lewis for reasonable quality; sales and clearance are always the places to start if you don't want to pay full price.

https://www.tmlewin.co.uk/mens/clearance/shirts

Hawes and Curtis is another option.

If you want something better for a special occasion, at a price - Canali; italian style and great quality.

I buy £7 sale shirts at Tesco or TK Maxx for carpentry work but end up thinking they're too nice for that and wearing them as smart shirts.
But I'm one of those lucky people who can carry off looking OK in cheap stuff.

M&S have lasted the best of all the shirts I've ever bought. They used to have an excellent range (not been into a clothes shop for nearly 2 years now, so can't comment on how it is now).

I recently signed up to thread as im terrible at finding clothes i like, you answer some quick questions about what you like and dont like and they send you through ideas every week, most are full outfits, but you can pick and choose and give the ideas the thumbs up or down.

The best bit is that if you like something you can buy it through the website, theres a massive range of prices for every budget.

The only issue i have found is that they give you too much stuff that you like and then end up buying quite a bit or at least i have.

Just looked at the TM Lewin site: first page of 'casual shirts' has a red/blue gingham shirt paired with pale cream chinos. That was my clubbing uniform when I was in college back in 1996!

+1 for having a rummage in TKMaxx (more formal usually packaged up and the more casual ones on the rails)

I find Joe Browns is middle aged enough to stop looking like i'm trying to hard, but quirky enough that i don't look like clone of most other dads.

I like uniqlo. There's a good selection, and I reckon the quality v price ratio is better than anywhere else.

Charles Twyrrt for formal shirts

+1. Get a few on a deal (there's always deals) and they'll last for years.

Charity shop. Casual to smart. Had some nice pinks shirt as well as more normal high street fashion.

Depends on what shape you are.

I'm 6' and 11 stone and I find All Saints size S or Ted Baker size 2/3 fit me pretty well and look nice for 'smart' duties.

Most high street shirts, for me, are either too big in the chest (if I get one long enough) or too short (if I buy one slim enough)

I have not been allowed to buy (choose) my own clothes for 35 years.

Meanwhile, I started buying my own clothes fifty-two years ago when I was fifteen, I think my first purchase was a pair of shrink-to-fit 501’s, from Millets in town. I think my mum was relieved to no longer have the responsibility!
I don’t dress much different, my latest jeans are virtually identical to my first pair of 501’s, dark blue selvedge denim, just not shrink-to-fit, and 32” waist instead of 28”!
Also quite capable of buying smarter stuff should it be necessary - I can scrub up reasonably well if the occasion requires; never owned a suit, though.

I have a few of these given to me as gifts. The non-iron ones aren't and the 'extra slim' fit isn't.

Much better value to be had elsewhere IMO.

I forgot to add Uniqlo shirts to my post above, they do a wide range of smart and casual shirts, I’ve got a bunch of their check flannel shirts, and I love them to bits, they’re so soft and comfortable to wear. They vary a bit in weight, some are really quite thick and heavy, others are somewhat thinner and lighter, and the lighter ones with smaller checks would make good smart/casual wear.

Where did you dredge that up from?
It's typical bono and I like.

Bespoke shirt when you visit your bespoke tailor.
If single cuffs have them monogrammed - subtly of course; if double cuffs leave them plain but wear monogrammed cufflinks.
We haven't touched on shoes - yet but 'you can judge a man by his shoes' is an interesting statement.

Guide London are my favourite. Small, slim fit with nice floral designs. I wear them for work and have represented the megacorp on official regulatory business whilst wearing them with a linen suit in Summer. Some of my staid US colleagues looked a little stunned (a pink shirt would be extreme for the US).

but sized as s/m/l.

I'm 195cm and slim so nothing off the peg fits me well (and with smart shirts I think fit is everything). Circa 8 years ago M&S made to measure was great value (cheaper and better fabrics than Bivolino who actually made them). I had a couple of shirts made by Bivolino direct but fabric choice, while vast, not much appealed and quality wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

I got a shirt made by propercloth.com a few months back and I'm really happy with it - ended up, with the 'new customer discount' you can find online, being about £100 delivered. US company, shirts appear to actually be made (and ship from) Vietnam.

I measured off existing shirts with some adjustments and got a great fit first time (though they will remake/adjust for free you have to pay shipping back to them) and you can make some really nice tweaks - I dropped the second button slightly as I'm wearing without a tie, and made the left cuff slightly larger to fit over a watch.

I changed to Tesco or Next. Both wear well and their slim fit's fit me perfectly. I don't find M&S as good as they used to be. TK Maxx is great IF they happen to have something in stock on the day I go but there is also a lot of unknown stuff in there.

On Youtube. It's on Tadpoles, one of several Bonzos albums I have. There is also reference to shirts in "Canyons of your Mind" ("in the wardrobe of your soul, in the section labelled shirts").
