How do they work then? How come they are cheaper than buying direct?

Looking at vans, and they claim to be able to save £5.5k on the RRP of the van I spec'd (VW T5 Kombi with a load of spangly options).
Could I get that sort of price by just talking to the dealer?
(never bought a car new before, but I really want a van and I'm seeing what it might cost me to get the one of my dreams)
Dave
hmm, just read that I can only select 5 'cost options'.. that might limit me slightly... I want to get different seats, plus add aircon and a few other bits.
Yes you can get that price from a dealer, but some are not keen on talking about it because they think walk-in customers will pay full retail...
How do I get them to give me that price though? Do I need to mention the internet people and get them to match it?
Dave
VW Kombi owner here.
I guess they're a bit like online bike shops and keep their costs down but not having expensive premises and lots of staff to pay. You might miss out on a bit of the "customer service" thingy. I know that some of the online companies used to have cars that might not be UK models if that is of concern to you, not sure if that is still the case though.
I found that I could get a very competitive price from a main dealer once they knew I was serious. Even got mats and flaps thrown in for free! Some main dealers were much better than others. Cordwallis Heathrow were rather helpful. Deals are easier to achieve if the vehicle is in the showroom and these vehicles usually have a high spec level.
I had a conversation with the guy in the dealer about ex-demo vans... he said that these normally have high specs as the showroom staff use them as their personal cars while they have them in.
I want a long wheelbase one, which makes it slightly harder. The only one they had in was a 180bhp 4motion panel van which they done an aftermarket kombi conversion to. I think if I was going to buy new, I'd want more control over the spec, so I could get exactly what I want.

Friend bought an Audi TT online, it was actually a dealer supplied car from another part of the country and arrived in a lorry direct to his house. He saved quite a bit but if you negotiate hard you might get close with your local dealer. The danger with online is uncertainty over where the vehicle has come from.
Note car dealers get bonuses / financing incentives if they hit certain sales targets hence from time to time they will discount more aggressively, the online guys can often pick that up.
Never bought a car from her myself, but Ling has the best website. It's stunning! Oh, you get free noodles too apparently.
Dave
lots of variables on what you can have and expect a wait for a factory order, I work do work for an internet van retailer, and 70% of what we sell is VW, if you want to discuss this further then give me a call 01656674633

ah right, cheers for the offer, but I'm not quite ready to actually buy anything yet. I'm at the pipedream stage, so I won't waste your time.
I'll keep you in mind for if/when I do actually buy something.
Dave
Any particular reason you're after a LWB?
I've got a SWB T5 that I converted from a panel van to a camper using a kit from Amdro, and it's plenty big enough, even has a fixed boot that'll get two roady bikes or one MTB plus loads of assorted cr@p in. Plus, being a SWB it fits in a standard car-park space, which if you're using it as an every day vehicle is surpisingly useful, and costs less on ferries etc.
If you ever manage to hook up wiv Da Cotswold Massiv, you can have a look at it 🙂
I used to have a LWB T4, the extra length was great for fitting stuff in.
I want to have a kombi (with proper seats in the back) and still fit 4 or 5 bikes in whole behind the seats. I took my bike to the dealership when I went, and tried it out... they fit in the LWB straight - the SWB had to have the wheels turned.
It won't be my only vehicle, and I never had any problem parking the old one.
I'll probably put a pop-top on it as well so I can keep bikes inside, arrive somewhere and kip in the roof - my old van I had to put the bikes outside to sleep, which was rubbish for security.
Dave
Fair enough.
The 'keeping the bikes inside' thing is great, that's the reason I plumped for the Amdro conversion.
