if i set myself a budget of £100 and look at the Screwfix site i see a selection of nicad, Li-ion, etc.

Real world how much difference is this going to make, anything to consider.

At that price point they're all pretty much the same .......go for li-ion if you can .....don't worry about 18v ....get something smaller but with 2 batteries and higher ah

The Makita with the 2 batteries. Good tool. Mine is now approx 7 yrs old and has had professional use, still works.

that makita is a cracking deal.

Ive abused the hell out of my 14.4v one and the batteries are now just about to start fading.

Sorely tempted to get that myself....
it's cheaper than getting two new 14.4v batteries.

However, bear in mind those are only 1.3Ah batteries.
Ive been using 2x 3.0Ah.

Another +1 for makita but get the LIon. Nice bit of kit. Fast charge.

why the Li-ion?

I get the fast charge, is there anything else, trying to remember old batteries, is it Nimh or Nicad that had the memory issue?

DEFINITELY go lithium. I got a cracking deal on some 10.8v Draper stuff (Drill/Impact driver combo) on Amazon which is fine for 99% of what I do, but have a big SDS corded for serious stuff.

Would have Makita if I had the $$$.

lithium is smaller, lighter and more punch.

If it's just for occasional DIY then 1 battery is fine and 1.3Ah will be fine.

ie get the makita and check the website for the 3yr warranty extension.

LIthium is lighter, charges quicker and holds it charge for longer (when left in box for periods)....

Try googling Stanley FatMax 18v Drill - 2 x 1.5aH Li batts......it promotes down to £100......£150 normally......
