I fancy getting an Aussie Cowboy / Crocodile Dundee / Indian Jones type thing for keeping the rain off whilst on holiday, but before I go for a £25 job from Amazon is there anything else that I should be considering?

Already got an Army jungle style one.

Get a Tilley.

Not cheap but last forever.

The dearer ones come in a proper range of sizes, not just M/L/XL.

Missus and I are Australian and both wear Drizabone wax cotton slouch hats. They are waterproof and make a great rain hat, we wear them just as often in the snow and sleet in winter as we do in the summer sun. You can fold them any which way when they need to be packed. They are available in the U.K. from https://www.webury.com/products/driza-bone-wax-slouch-hat but I see they are now £60 each and I’m not sure I’d say they are worth that, they aren’t constructed as neatly as a Tilly for example.

So if you are after an Australian style bush hat, I suggest you look at the kangaroo leather options from Jacaru: https://www.jacaru.com/collections/kangaroo-leather-hats

You mean apart from that fact that everyone (except Indiana Jones, obvs) looks a bit like they're trying to look like Indiana Jones?

Got a snowbee hat in a similar style, can easily be crumpled into a bag and doesn't bother it. Waterproof too and a good sun shade for the neck. Got it off a fishing web site (can't remember which one now) for a lot less than a tilly

The idea of these is great, but you do end up looking like a prize plumb in one.

Tilley hemp hat

I got one 15 or more years ago, loved that hat. Developed a great patena over the years too.

I eventually broke the rim re enforcement in such a way that it flopped down at the front. Sent it off for a repair but unfortunately they were not able to guarantee a solid repair due to my general abuse of the thing over the years. New bunnet sent out free of charge (I think I paid the postage) and I’m back to the start of breaking the new one in

Of course, other hats are available for lesser chaps, but any self respecting gent should really have a Tilley

I have incredibly dull dress sense, just generic mid 40s bloke in old man outdoor/sports wear, so not sure I should be offering style advice.

But I can't imagine what would have gone wrong with my life that I'd consider wearing one of those hats.  Anyway, good luck with finding one that suits you

Decathlon have a decent selection of hats in their hunting/fishing section. Not sure how big the hunting sections are in UK Decathlons.

Since I had a carcinoma removed, various doctors breathed the fear of God into me about getting my head in general, and my ears in particular exposed to sunlight. I went for Tilley.

i may look like a muppet, which is a matter of taste I guess. But I really getting not to care. Beauty is clearly in the eye of the beholder, because some guys who wear flat caps seem to think that Tilleys look ridiculous. Now, it may be because I grew up on a farm in Ulster, where old geezers wore flat caps all the time - but I think there is absolutely no look so utterly daft-looking,  without any redeeming qualities as a youngish/middleaged guy wearing a flat cap.

My point isn't that flat caps look silly, or Tilleys look great. But really, I coming to believe that it’s much more up to you to be comfortable with your look, whatever it is.

Clearly not seen the riders at the start of the TdF in the Basque hats?

I went for one of These to keep the sun off my bald head this summer.

By the time I'd finished with it looks more Revolting Cocks than Indiana Jones though.

Tarp hat have an ebay shop where they sell seconds. This one cost me around 20 quid.

Except Indy’s hat is a customised Fedora, with a higher crown and narrower brim than a standard one. It really doesn’t look like a Tilly, or Aussie bush/slouch hats. I’ve worn a fedora in the past and been asked if I was Crocodile Dundee!

Wear what you like, there will always be some jackass making snarky comments, thinking he’s the world’s best standup. Clue: he isn’t.

The Drizabone suggestion above is good if your head isn’t massive … they don’t make them big enough for me 🙁

And roo leather is amazing. I have a 14 year old one that is brilliant (they’ve doubled in price now!) It doesn’t go mouldy like all other leather in the tropics, water doesn’t affect it, but the brim isn’t quite wide enough for sun protection for me.

I recently bought an XL Thomas Cook  oil skin wide brim and it’s great too. https://thestabledoor.com.au/products/thomas-cook-wide-brim-oilskin-hat-camel?

Another antipodean here, and another fan of ‘roo leather. I’ve a very bald head and it keeps the rays off my bonce, lugs and snout.

Brahma squishy kangaroo for me 🦘

I’ve just had an Amazonas Tarphat that Gordimhor linked to up there^^^^

* I look like an idiot. This may or may not have anything to do with the hat.

Missus and I are Australian

Thread hijack. What are the straw hats I see load of auz wearing? Almost like the standard cheap ones as you see people wearing them for work. Can't seem to get them with a Google
