I am in the market for a new tablet type thing to replace my aged, and now very slow iPad 2. It's used for note taking in meetings, a few videos, general web browsing, that kind of thing. So nothing to hardcore.

My instinct was to just buy a new iPad but I used a Samsung Galaxy on holiday and was quite impressed with it, albeit I am comparing it to an old iPad.

So what's good and what's new?

There is a chance new iPads will be announced in early september so certainly don't buy yet.

Not much of a difference between an Android tab and an iPad these days, it all depends if you have other services or machines that integrate in to the relevant eco system of software.

I personally have a mac and iphone so stick to apple but have used an Android tab for a time and it was great.

The new iPad in September is a very good point actually, not something I'd thought about.

I use an iPhone and iPad but currently have a Window's PC. So not a Apple fanboi but I do like their mobile OS.

Have you tried a factory reset and start again on your existing iPad? Might give it a new lease of life, certainly helped a lot when I used to have an iPhone.

Oh yes, a couple of times. It helped a touch but not enough sadly.

For iPad money there's the MS Surface Pro 3 which is very good. Especially if you shell out for the pen too, which is excellent. Loads of extra functionality.

Surface plus keyboard? Keyboard for note taking including being able to draw on the notes, then rip the keyboard off and use a tablet for browsing. Easy file transfer etc etc

Certainly something I am considering for the next iPad type device.

Edit - beaten to it by molgrips.

New iPads get announced in the final or the 1st quarter so I'd not expect an announcement next month.

Take a look at the Pro range I use mine a lot for work with the pen and it's fantastic.

Nice things about Surface:

- Full Windows, so you can use all sorts of proper software on it
- With the keyboard it's a laptop, with trackpad and all
- Without it, it's a tablet and works like one
- The pen and associated software
- USB host meaning you can connect USB devices to it e.g. card readers, cameras etc

Disadvantages:

- Bigger and heavier than a smaller tablet
- Not as much tablet specific software
- More expensive than a general Android tablet

Bigger and heavier than a smaller tablet

I suspect that applies quite generally.

Mrs TiRed has an iPad2. I have an iPad Mini 4. There is a big difference in speed. I much prefer the smaller form factor as a general "this is not a laptop" tool.

Had a Blackberry Playbook before that, and it is a nicer piece of hardware but can't be upgraded to Android, apparently 🙁

The iPad Mini 4 is not the same size as the other Mini's, which was pretty poor show when somebody "borrowed" my Mini 2.

I recently bought an Alcatel Pixi 3 tablet with keyboard for pretty much the same requirements as you; one note for meetings, browsing internets and spotify.

Really impressed and came with a good bluetooth keyboard, (as good as my laptop keyboard) for typing with.

Mine also cost about £20 from Sainsburys after a nectar point voucher deal...

Another advantage of the Surface is the aspect ratio, good for working with photos...

In a reccomend what you got style, I've been pleased with an Acer R11 chromebook 11". Folds 180 degrees into a tablet, and can now run Android apps (currently have to switch to a "dev channel" in settings, but full release soon).

Was 130 quid from Argos Refurb site (looks like new).

I find the Surface to be too big and heavy to be a good tablet. To me it is a nice laptop that is ruined by a poor keyboard and top heaviness. I think most get used as laptops for 90% of the time so pretty big compromises for the 10% of time spent as a tablet (YMMV). If you just want one device then go for it but if the tablet is to supplement a decent laptop then I would pass.

If the form factor of your current iPad suits you and you are willing to spend the money then sticking to Apple would be sensible. Maybe consider the smaller iPad Pro if the pencil appeals.

If you want to save some money then there are some good Android tablets available now. I was very impressed by a colleagues Sony Z4 but that is a high end option.

I have a Surface Pro and it is fantastic but as above, it is more of an alternative to a laptop. I use it when travelling as it is so much lighter and more compact than a laptop but it is not really a substitute for a tablet.

OP web browsing will be improved by using an advertisement impediment device 😉 ie a bl0cker. IME it s the ads which an old iPad struggled with, my iPad1 eventually ground to a halt and iOS5 is too old for a bl0cker

As for a new device I went for an Air2 iPad (18 odd months ago ?) I am fully Apple so like sharing between devices inc browser history, password keychain etc.

Right, an update.

I think I'm going for an iPad Pro 9.7" as it's the right size, feels good and quick to use and I know IOS from iPhone and old iPad usage.

So, before I click buy, anything Android based I should try? I don't like the Surface, had a play with my bosses and don't like it at all.

I use a cheap Lenovo with a detachable keyboard - it wasn't much more than £100 but has a quad-core processor and works pretty well. We've got an iPad Mini, a couple of android tablets and the Lenovo which is on Windows 10. I'd say it's the best of them, with the iPad mini getting probably the least amount of use.

The best Android tablet at the moment is the Google Pixel C.
It has the latest OS Nougat and has a discount for the 64GB model.
Mine arrived this week and is easily the best tablet I've had.

Seconded.

Stick with the iPad and wait until September. The Android "space" has given up on tablets.
