Ok Im late to the party...

On freeview 19 now.

Jeesus the residents are idiots. They see the land near their house as their territory and nothing, no other focus in their petty lives?!

National Parks are like NIMBY Heaven. They've paid a premium to live there and believe their purchase makes them a fully paid up protector of the faith.

Quite an old programme that.

I caught the last 10 minutes of it - not sure if it was that one or another one which concentrated more specifically on this trail at Great Longstone. Marked as a RUPP and regularly used by 4x4s, motorbikes etc and this was upsetting all the local NIMBYs. The arguments they were coming out with - honestly. I was so intrigued by this oasis in the Peaks that I rode out there on the CX one day specifically to ride that trail and see what all the fuss was about. Talk about anti-climax, really couldn't see what all the fuss was about. One more random gravel/grass lane in amongst millions of other gravel/grass lanes and they were trying to get it reclassified to FP to stop 4x4s using it.

Old programme, old issues, but timeless ones nonetheless.

NIMBYism in all it's glory.

We live in a nice village (and have basically paid a premium to do so). Loads of fun runs, bike rides and general orienteering type stuff is routed past our house. I like it. There is always something going on at the weekends, always someone outside to say hello to. One lad put his rucksack down on our stone garden wall and knocked a few bits out, he apologised, I said not to worry and rebuilt it. It's just getting along isn't it?

You only have to look at the 'gentrification' of Hebden to see how it goes. Area is made 'desirable' by people with a good general attitude. Prices rise, people move in and pay a premium to do so. First thing they want to do is 'protect' their 'investment' by building walls and fences and shutting it off from the outside world. Thus undermining the spirit of the area that attracted them in the first place.

Or the wrong type- pushy, used to getting their way in the cut n thrust world elsewhere move into a quiet area and they want it their way, its their territory now. People should do things their way, their land.

Seen this in Hebden (bloke wasn't a local either. Admitted he'd move to the area when I said its England, I'm from over the hill **** off).

Yeah I assumed that but I still have no idea what you just said. I've never encountered these Hebden NIMBYs but I have read them whinging on HebWeb and in the local paper.

Most people are polite and friendly when out and about IME, as long as you are considerate.

I read that as the ones on the TV program, not all in reality.

Was that the programme where a trail rider rode slowly and considerately past a group of local walkers who were determined to have a confrontation?

Generalisation- Not all of course, just those redfaced ones, the shaking faces and barely contained anger at someone daring to use a lane for its intended purpose.

Chapel Gate- ALL around them is farmland, land thats been changed, walls erected etc- not how nature intended yet they are wound up tight about a track. Mental. I imagine none of the residents use a vehicle or drive round any Peaks roads if they care that much for the environment.

grum- Twice I've encountered nutjob locals in Hebden, one in a 4x4 (irony) who wheelspan back upto me, jumped out and started shouting after I showed my displeasure of him driving past me close at speed on my bike 'to make a point'.

Another who blocked and shoved me saying he lived there and I shouldn't be there. In conversation it turned out he wasn't from Yorkshire, I pointed out I was and anyway its not his land or illegal...

There's the same mix of characters and personality types here as anywhere else. The only factor that may skew things are those that have retired here and bought a nice cottage adjacent to a green lane and then decide that they don't want the noise of vehicles passing their house. But you get those type of people all over - cue tales of people wanting the banning of church bells, cows lowing and cockerels crowing.

(the other thing about the retired contingent is that many are well connected with a lot of time and experience to use in pursuit of their aims)
