You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I love progs like this but in tonight's episodes there were a few mistakes:
1) kiln dried wood is nothing new
2) it's pointless taking a moisture meter reading from the outside of a piece of wood - should be from the inside
3) they didn't even put the prongs of the moisture meter into the wood! My moisture meter also shows 0-2% when it's not touching anything.
That's all.
I ordered a mositure meter last night (quite by coincidence). I am quite excited about using it but the above are helpful tips. Thanks.
Also said dried wood was something like 25% on the meter. I've got one just the same as used on the programme and mine reads 10-12% before I burn it.
Agreed about the use of the meter, I use mine just to get a comparison.
Plus I calibrated mine (how sad am I?) by weighing some wood, then drying in the oven until no more weight loss,(approx) = dry and taking a reading before and after.
Damn that's the second time I've missed this program.
I think the 25% is the guideline max moisture content to sell firewood as 'kiln dried'. It'll often be drier than that nearer the surface after kilning and most diy moisture readers have pretty short probes. I'm lucky having a 60m3 kiln with computerised management at work(oooh, get me 😉 ). Having said that, I stockpile my firewood outside to season and it burns just fine.
Enjoying the programme though. I know the woods in the programme and some of the 'characters' which I guess makes it more interesting to me; like a lot of people, I gaze wistfully out of the window dreaming of the idyllic outdoors woodsman's life but, of course, the reality is very different to the dream...
Me too but it's on I player - really worth watching - thanks
the reality is very different to the dream...
This, unless you can do it full time and be paid for it.
