I think that’s taking crypto mining a bit far
If recovered Mr Howells said he would give 10% of the proceeds to turn the city into a
Well at least he's giving back to the city.
crypto-currency hub.
Oh. Oh no.
I did have some sympathy for him, albiet his own stupidity, until I read that he was going to give 'abaout' 10% for crypto stuff! I'm sure thats what they really need....
this story - unlike the hard drive - surfaces every year! Although this time, the guy looks like Lex Luthor 🤣 But seriously, I do feel sorry for him, I don't think he'll ever find it or even be allowed to look - must be tough knowing you threw that kind of £££ away, I wonder if he can actually function, or does it consume every waking minute?
to be fair, he'd previously offered £50m to the council with no strings attached - which they rejected - so probably just trying a different tack/trying to drum up interest again.until I read that he was going to give ‘abaout’ 10% for crypto stuff
He's been banging on about this for years. If I were the Council I'd just tell him to sod off.
If he was that good with Crypto he could have made millions more in the 10 years he's been lamenting over what could have been.
Every time his bins are collected must be like a punch to the gut. If he'd recycled it as e-waste would he have had a better chance of recovering it?
He should have a think about his personal data security - any sensible person would've properly bricked the drive before chucking it away so the whole thing would be a non-story.

Yep I stick a pillar drill through the platters before I bin them.....

Except its was considerably easier to make a bitcoin in the early days than it is now.

You think he lets his bins be collected? I'll bet that he hasn't chucked anything out for years!
Buy the tip!!!
That guy must be sick as a parrot. I could never visualise why it's so hard to find stuff in a landfill. There was a tragic story a few years back about a guy who fell asleep in a bin and, they assume, got taken to landfill. If they can't find him with all the will, amenities and cooperation at hand, then that guy's never finding a little hard drive on his own.
Buy the tip!!!
That's probably the best idea!

If only he knew where to locate some money..
to be fair, he’d previously offered £50m to the council with no strings attached – which they rejected
I thought I read they didn't reject it, just asked him to pay for all the work, moving waste, diverting to another site etc regardless, which it transpired was going to cost rather a proportion of those 50 millions and he didn't have £50.00 let alone anyone willing to finance his (probably failed) recovery attempt.
(iirc he's also got no proof of ever having owned the things, so could be a delusional fantasist)
"The funding has been secured. We've brought on an AI specialist. Their technology can easily be retrained to search for a hard drive.
Well, that's me convinced.
Just switch on the AI, easy! What are the council waiting for??

yes they can just train it on all that data from the 1000s zero of time(s) rubbish tips have been excavated looking for lost hard drives.
If I lived in that area and heard about his “10% crypto-hub bollocks”, I’d be lobbing broken hard drives into my wheelie bin every week just to spite him.
I feel a little bit sorry for this guy & would be kicking myself if I'd thrown away 8000 bitcoin. But, he really needs to let this go & stop popping up on the news every year or two with another hair-brained scheme to find this hard drive.
Reminds me of the guy who binned a (£3m) jackpot winning lottery ticket. He had proof of him buying the ticket (cctv from the shop when he bought it.) but they wouldn’t pay out as you need to be in possession of the ticket to claim.
He’s since made a lot more than £3m writing books about his experience. Just a thought for laddo up there.

Especially as it's totally out of his hands - council, who own the tip, don't GAF.
Maybe he could start a consultancy on bitcoin mining and, erm, making backups of hard discs.
council, who own the tip, don’t GAF
Or they've found the hard drive 🤣
yeah, I'm still 50/50 whether it's real, or he just likes getting his pic in the paper every year when he trots the story out again 😃(iirc he’s also got no proof of ever having owned the things, so could be a delusional fantasist)
🤯Or they’ve found the hard drive 🤣
Any Newport council employees retired to the Bahamas in the past 10 years 🤔

Yep, you know someone who just throws away a hdd will have had "P4$$word" as their key.
If he has the funds to search he would be better off buying a load of lottery tickets. More chance of winning big than finding his alleged hard drive!
If, and its a big if, he has funding there will be a huge chunk of that derived from selling the rights to the story so lottery tickets are unlikely to gain him access to the funding even though the %return will as you rightly say, probably be higher.
Misread thread title as 'Taking things, literally' so assumed it was about nicking stuff.
Is disappoint...
