Im planning a first foray into taking the bike on a holiday, the loose idea is to fly with squeesy jet to Amsterdam and go where the flow takes us for a week.

From what I have heard on here I know I have to "package" the bike up to put it in the hold, which I think I can do with cardboard & plastic etc.

Just wondering from those who have done this before, how do you source the packaging for the return journey?

cheers

If you are going to the Dam' with your bike you may also consider taking the ferry, saves you packaging it up and just ride on and off the ferry. Ferrys from a few places in the uk to holland; Newcastle - IJmuiden (Just north of Amsterdam), Hull - Hook of Holland, Harwich to Hook of Holland.

Not sure about Amsterdam, but some of the big airports have places where you can buy bike boxes for the return journey, Geneva for example. Other option (but probably expensive) would be to take a proper bike bag and check it into left luggage while you're away?

Any decent bike shop will give you a bike box and packing stuff (May require exchange of biscuits, though) Best ring in advance to check they have some spare.

Thanks for the replies.

I did consider the ferry but the time taken by 2 nights on the ferry plus getting to the UK port is going to take up too much time of the holiday.

Ill check out AMS to see if they offer the bike packaging service. I had thought about the proper bike box and storing it there but additional cost of hiring one and left luggage initially put me off.
