Anyone had any hassle taking bike parts (chainset etc) on as hand luggage on airlines such as Ryanair?

Cheers!

Are you serious?!? If something could be used as a weapon you won't get it on. A club-like chainset with sharp chainrings really isn't a wise idea to even try...

As above - not a chance! I fly with tools regularly for work and they must always go in the hold.

Same here, no way are they going to consciously let them on
I did once get on with a pair of side cutters and some cable ties in my pocket though

I had a chain and some tools when I flew to France in September. My mate had a cassette and tools. They didn't even open my bag, they opened his looked at the cassette and let him through.

For some perfectly good reason which I can't remember now I'd taken the chain off and zip-tied my bike bag shut before I noticed. Being too tight to use a second tie needlessly I just put the chain in my rucksack. I had it taken off me at Geneva and put in the hold, so had to watch the carousel at Bristol for my bike bag and the small jiffy bag they put the chain in, got some odd looks!

So basically I wouldn't chance it.

Using big Camelback for hand luggage a few years back and forgot to remove multi-tool, almost got lynched at Newcastle!! Guards with hands on guns etc 😳
Happy for them to confiscate, was one of those forecourt cheapos...
Try it and find out for yourself, all depends if you can afford to lose your kit 💡 ❓

I've had to dismantle the multitool and take off the torx driver and Philips driver and post them home. Allen keys were fine (well they were rattly to use for the whole holiday). I've taken shock springs and pedals in hand luggage a few times.

I was working at George Best airport, Belfast and they stopped me going through with a swiss army knife on my belt but they let my toolbox through with an 8" blade carving knife in it. It's luck of the draw so assume the worst case scenario.

In case you dismantle the plane?
