I appear to have a tailors bunion on one of my feet.
Googling suggest treatment is either very intrusive (surgery to chop it off basically) or questionable as to if it works (toe separators, etc.).
Before I spend money on a chiropodist, I wondered if anyone had these and managed to fix it?
Had them for as far back as I can remember (since a kid). Kind of like a 6th toe on each foot.
Basically end up buying shoes too long to accommodate. Or spend time stretching out an area to but still have to get shoes too long. I've never been able to get my toes near the end of a shoe. With the exception of Altra shoes.
Doctors for you m'lad 🙂
I had a bunion for most of my life (inside edge of my big toe) and eventually last year it was getting to the point of being painful.
Certainly it had been years since I could climb (feet with a massive bulge on one side don't fit well into climbing shoes!) and running was near impossible.
The NHS route sends you via chiropodist - who tried various insoles, none of which eased symptoms - and then eventually onto the surgery approach. From first referral to actual surgery was about a year although a significant delay in that was due to other factors, it would have been about 8 months without those.
Surgery was one day. In, checks, preparation, local anaesthetic, 45min operation, about an hour on the ward recovery time, then out. You will need someone to drive you home!
Was walking on crutches and with a big orthopaedic sandal within a day. A week later they re-dressed the foot, a week after that the bandages came off altogether and they left me with a fibreglass cuff thing to wear around the house to protect it from knocking against anything.
Was cycling within a few days of the dressing coming off; stiff soled road shoes support the foot well! Took another week until I was happy driving.
Getting it sorted was SUCH a relief. Apart from anything else it was quite embarrassing going swimming etc but it was also painful after long stints in cycling shoes or a lot of walking.
All that's left is a small scar, about 4" long and a normal shaped foot.
Seriously, if you have the option, get it sorted. It's never going to get any better by itself and if you put off getting it sorted until later life, recovery time will be much longer.
I have tailors ones on both feet. It varies on how sore they get, some times excruciating after a few long days on the bike. As in a can't face wearing shoes and take them off at every opportunity.
From time to time I take a sharp knife/scapel and file to cutaway and file down all the hard rough skin that's built up and any lump in it and it really helps helps for a good while.
Also compeed over them really helps quite a lot when they're bad from lots of cycling and walking.
I try to buy wider fitting shoes, I've stretched my leather hiking boots in that area with a brush handle water and heat. Some of my shoes I have the bottom few lace crosses quite loose and then tie a knot so that only the top over my upper feet is actually tightened when I fasten them.
Those combos help me quite a lot. I'm not prepared to look at surgery yet...
