Any reason I shouldn't use the bog standard battery replacement counter in Debenhams?
Will an expensive watch place / jewelers do anything different?
I take mine to Debenhams, never had a problem
They will not put new seals in so bang goes its water resistece. Ask if they have a pressure tank to test WR after replacement if no go somewhere else. Unless of course your not bothered about WR in which case, crack on. Just seems too nice a watch not to keep it at full potential.
The counters are a franchise so some are very good such as staines and basingstoke but others are total shite such as the one in reading.
They'll pressure test for a fiver extra but they won't change the crown or button seals or anything like that.
I've used the basingstoke branch for a few tags and a cartier with no problems on any of them.
Just waiting for my watch to be sent back from Tag after having a new battery, I was quoted £90 but they contacted me to suggest that a few things needed to be changed, various seals etc. They also confirmed I would get a years warranty for the work completed. The final bill however is £330 - Ouch ! 🙁
Mainly though Tag will ensure that it is tested to the correct pressures for water resistance.
Yes. like others have said it can compromise the water resistance of the watch.
I use Terry at http://www.swiss-serv.co.uk/.
He repaired my watch after I had the battery replaced at a local jewellers.
OK, so doing it properly sounds like the way forward. Any independents to recommend in Surrey?
I've said this before but I used a watch doctor type place and they managed to knackered my 2000 and my Mrs s/el, be warned!.
The final bill however is £330 - Ouch !
Suddenly an apple watch sounds reasonably priced!
I had mine done at a watch makers. They were able to redo the seals and pressure test it....for about £27 I think. Tag wanted £80 and it was away for up to 6 weeks. Watch was 1 yr old!
My son has specialist tools to do pressure testing etc, used for submarines and stuff. He explained what they do to seal it and pressure test it so I was happy with that.
Had terrible service off Tag in the past. Sent me someone else's watch back the first time, then finally sent me my one back and it looked like they'd put the case back together with pliers. And charged me £300 for it.
On this reason alone I won't have another one. Ended up having the battery replaced at a place in Debenhams. Cheaper, quick and they didn't wreck it.
I believe that Timpson will pressure test - there was a post on another forum I saw about them being just as good as Tag for battery replacement.
We provide ... battery replacements with a re-seal and pressure test for water resistant watches.
From the In-Time (in Debenhams) website. And there's a guarantee.
