Only noticed this yesterday, my app upgraded to the new version, then reverted to the old style hours later.

On the new app (I think) there was a £2.99 month charge to utilise the existing geofencing and open window services?

Still not sure if I keep the old functionality as an older user or need to upgrade, feels a bit sneaky, there's no mention it on there NPD roadmap! I'll do a bit more digging later.

I'll not be upgrading as I live alone and I'm out of the house at random times so my main benefit is the manual on/off function.

We’re quite invested in Tado stuff and the latest changes seem like a right con... from what I can work out, existing customers can keep the current / old app, the same functionality and not need to pay anything whereas any new customers or existing customers ‘upgrading’ the app will get the geofencing, open window detection (etc) functionality ‘for free’ but the app will no longer make automated changes.   So if it detects you’re away from the house you’ll get a notification asking whether you want it to turn off.   If you want it to carry on working as a smart thermostat and automate that, then you’d need to pay the £2.99 a month fee.   They’ve committed to maintain the current app for existing customers but I guess that means not getting any new functionality

To sell sell a smart thermostat and then withhold all the ‘smart’ automation unless you also subscribe seems crazy.   And the lack of transparency in their roadmap is really poor.  Oh, and the hardware has gone up about 20% in the UK.

I can only guess they’re struggling to make ends meet so needed to find another way of ringing money out of people.    Check out their Facebook page and you’ll find quite a few pissed off customers...

Yeah that’s how read it working from now on, I’ve commented on their FB page….

I only have a thermostat and extension, it’s not the end of the world, I’m just surprised they thought this decision would go well!

Disappointing as I brought into Tado for the simplicity, they seemed pretty transparent and honest about their products,

I’ve not looked for a few years but I assume both Nest and Hive do the same job without the subscription fee?

It’s looking like some of the revenue is needed to maintain the internal servers.

I saw last year that as a company they just wanted to focus on air and heat management without going into the wider areas of security camera’s etc,

At the time I thought it was possibly to small a segment but they’d generate additional sales from the air con products in warmer climates

Maybe the markets just not generating enough sales, or more probably greedy initial investors.

Seems like the most perfect way I’ve ever seen to perfectly destroy your current, and new customer base in a single hit!
