Any views on places to live that are not Reading but dont cost too much? We both currently work in Reading so cant go too far. Would love to live in the Chilterns or Mortimer but cant afford them..

Tadley is pretty much AWE Aldermaston if that's likely to bother you..

Bramley? - seems a bit cheaper than Mortimer and is on the same rail line if you want to use the train.

Or Woolhampton or Aldermaston Wharf on the A4 between Reading and Thatcham - also on a rail line or you could cycle to Reading along the canal.

Tadley isnt nice but seems in a nicer setting than Thatcham. Bramey would be considered but nothing in our price range has come up. Want to live somewhere not surrounded by crackheads and prostitutes where the schools arent wall to wall shite.

I've always assumed that Thatcham must be the theft capital of the world, all my motorbike security stuff was Thatcham-tested.

You need a train line? If so, Aldermaston Wharf, Woolhampton, Theale etc are all on that route. If the preference is for a town, Theale might be an option in addition to your suggestions? Smaller places i would consider are Aldermaston Wharf, Woolhampton, or Bradfield Southend which arent always as expensive as some of the other villages (but the villages are generally more expensive than the towns).

What sort of price range/housing are you after? I spent about six months looking in the same areas and affordable (for me) stuff did crop up between the all overpriced stuff. It just tended to sell very quickly!

Live in Thatcham and as all places, good and bad. Been here 11 years now. Wife lived in Tadley ( we rib her about it, before I knew her) and doesnt anymore 😉
Newbury is cheaper to live. Dont go near any homes in Station Road, lots of scum in there. Good schools including Kennet , which has a good ofstead etc. Ask away..........

I've seen places in Mortimer and Woolhampton for sale in your price range, although they may have been a bit small if you have a growing family.

What about Basingstoke? Chineham or old basing are nice and on the reading side. Good schools and catchment ...

I live in Tadley, been here for 9 yrs or so. It seems to have a stigma from the past but I've never had any bother, has everything you need and a decent amount of riding from the door. If you don't want to live in "Tadley" then look at Pamber or Burghurst. But in Tadley the Ex Awe 2 or 3 beds are decent size houses on a decent plot size and always seem to be in demand for when you move on.

Look West instead of south of Reading, past Pnagbourne, Aldworth, Hampstead Norrys, Ashampstead etc.

Yup, hence my suggestions as i bought one for £200k in the area 🙂

it's small... but... it's a lovely lovely area to live and easy commute down through Bradfield to Jn13.

Jn 12 is probably closer to Bradfield 😉 It all depends on what you want really. Judging by the links you put up, happy with a normal 3 bed semi. Rural location is nice , in a way, used to live in Tidmarsh. But in the winter found it just dark, always . Stumbling round with a torch. Glad I made the move to Thatcham for that reason alone and also more space as housing cheaper. Also street lighting means I can get out without a torch etc. Schools are good as well here. Which makes life easier for them as well for after school activities and friends. I am also still local to the Chilterns, Greenham and local areas for rides.

anagallis_arvensis, re: the £197k house that you linked up in Tadley, that road is used to cut across Tadley and cars don't tend to stick to 30 and is a little busier than the side roads.

Slightly over budget, but something like this, good size 3 bed, nicer road:
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-38169590.html?premiumA=true

Or if you find a two bed version of the above, theyr'e only slightly smaller and you can split the front bedroom into two 10x12 rooms (this is what we have done).

Become a commoner - http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-25485489.html

Bit of an 'irritating' place imho, it's very handy for everything you'll ever need (Reading,M4,trains etc etc) but actually has next to nothing itself and it's extremely irritatingly laid out in that it has no centre and the 'facilities' are incredibly spreadout.

Have you considered Yateley or Wokingham, nice little towns and about the same distance. Lived near Thatcham in Newbury for nearly 10 years, would not rush back.

what about Comton, to the north of Thatcham. Right on the downs but cheaper than surrounding villages due to the institute housing.

Wokingham is silly money, Yateley not quite as silly but still a bit daft.

This thread is like a trip down memory lane, I lived in Padworth for 25 years.

Unfortunately I left 10 years ago so I doubt I can be much help. Good luck with the search, it's a lovely place to grow up.

OP -Reading isn't all crackheads/whores. There was 12 cars vandalised on my street the other week-someone 'etched' swastikas and NF logos on them all, really classy like.
Depressing.

Forget this one mate. Been in Thatcham 42yrs and a postie here for nearly 22. This house is on the edge of a not so nice estate and close by are alleys used by all to get to and from the town/pubs/etc. There are nice people and houses there but if you have the chance to avoid going there, do. Like Thrusty said, avoid the estate in station rd. called Kennet Heath...parts are like a ghetto sadly for the people that bought expensive houses there.

Never thought I'd see Pangbourne compared to Tadley in the same thread!! Two villages at opposite ends of the price bracket, you could not find!!

I've never been to Tadley, been through it ....

However i'd be wondering why it's £15,000 less than others, but nicer/bigger 🙂

Re: Pangbourne... I just saw that one at £200k there, but if it's not in a nice spot, that explains it I guess. (I dunno the prices in the rest of the village... I guess it might well be very hefty at the station end but the Reading side? Anyway, I know nuffink, I live in West Reading. If you know the nicer streets to live on you can get a great big house and a decent sized garden. But you certainly need to know the area.)

Of course the single most important thing is the ease of getting across the bridge at either Whitchurch or Caversham, and up into them there hills. 😀

Mother lives near Tilehurst station on the oxford road and I can honestly say, I was glad to get out of west Reading like my back was on fire. Wouldnt go any closer than Purley. Evening Robbie, he knows the place better than me. As in all towns there is good and bad. That Tadley one is close enough to Pedal On to be a financial disaster 😉
Personally, even though the mother in law lives in Silchester, I wouldnt go to Tadley, but the choice is yours. You do have a Sainsburys, but in Thatcham, you have a Waitrose and Newbury is 5 mins away for all the others and DIY and Argos etc etc. Basingstoke isnt far for Tadleyites, but that is neck tatooed knuckle dragger country..If you shop there, you'll know what I mean.

Tilehurst isn't bad though 🙂

Re: the last one for £185k, that area is fine but that particular house is on a walkway so has no direct road access if that bothers you, hence the lower price.

(I know this is deviating from the original poster's request, but I like West Reading. You just have to know where (not) to live, like I say. My street's brilliant, a proper community where everyone knows each other. And within a 10 minute walk I can buy pretty much any nationality of dinner 😀 But I know naff all about the towns around Tadley so I'll shush now.)

Hello. Sorry to gatecrash as I don't belong to this forum but came across this thread while looking for information on Thatcham so thought I'd ask as noticed some of you have lived in Thatcham for many years.

We currently live in Theale but looking to move to the Newbury area. Newbury is too expensive and would involve a lot of compromises. Someone suggested Thatcham (though a lot warned against it) but we were encouraged by the fact that it has good schools. We have a child who will start primary next year.
We are interested in few properties but since we don't know the area at all and are going completely blind, I would massively appreciate feedback on the following roads/area, crime being our main concern as I noticed from local police reports that Thatcham tends to have a high rate of theft/robbery including breaking into houses in violent ways.
The areas we plan to visit are the following:

-Fokerham Road (in the catchment area of Francis Bailey and the Kennet)
-Beancroft Road
-Glenmore Close
-Oak Tree Road

We keep getting adverts from estate agents on attractive houses in the "desirable" Moors development. It looks ok from the pics but is it really desirable?

And finally, is Spurcroft primary as good as Francis Bailey?

Thank you so much if you had the patience to read till the end and I look forward to any sort of feedback.

Hi Waterlilly,
I,m a Thatcham postie so will try and help you. The best road IMO is Glenmore cl. Small cul de sac, no alleys but close to train line. There is a high bank so it may reduce noise. The top end of Beancroft is the nicer part as further down are flats with dubious occupants if you know what I mean? So you will get foot traffic going by plus vehicles as there are several closes down there too. Oaktree rd looks to be ok but are older houses so could have bigger gardens depending on which side of the road. No alleys and further along the road might be better than the entrance end again for traffic from joining roads Alexander and Beech . Fokerham houses look nicer down the end but have alleys leading to a green so you may get more people through but it's close to the Kennet school. I can,t help with schools though as only one of my grand kids is still at school and she,s just started but not at the ones you mention. Hope you find something suitable.

Rob.

Used to live in Monk Sherbourne and then later on in Old Basing, both great places to live, at the time I worked in Basingstoke and then a bit later on in Reading, it was quite a contrast between the workplace surrounding and then home. It didn't bother me adding a bit more time on the commute for a more relaxing enviroment later on. Guess I'm saying be prepared to travel a bit more it can be worth it.
