I can't see any previous threads and just wondering what 'the people' rate and recommend. Basically its for Mrs STS to shop on and the kids to play/learn on so they leave my laptop alone ... and for me to play on and read MTB mags on zinio

Thinking of something like the Samsung Galaxy probably rather than the Ipad (not for any great reason, just don't have Iphone or lots of money 😉 ), but interested to see what people have and recommend or know of any good offers on at the moment (as I work best on impulsive bargain buys).

Thanks.

Mate, this thread will soon be full of adults feverishly arguing over which tablet is best in a top trumps scenario.
Go to a shop, try a few out and buy whichever you prefer/fits your budget.
Whichever one you end up with I'm sure you'll be pleased with it.

I was in HMV yesterday, handling a few. I was surprised at the difference in weight amongst some of the major contenders. The heaviest ones would be uncomfortable. I suggest you try the same thing before settling on a decision.

I've had my Galaxy Tab 10.1 since just before xmas, I've not used my laptop since. I went for the Galaxy because I didn't want to get drawn into the iEverything con/ripoff. The only disappointment at the moment is the Sky Go app won't work on it but Sky claim to be working on it.

I got one of those HP Touchpads in the 'fire sale' last year

Does everything you want and is well built, I can't see a down side to them TBH
You'll get a new one on ebay for around £170, which I reckon is a great deal for what you get

If you don't want/need 3G then the Motorola Xoom is a good buy.....

http://www.dixons.co.uk/gbuk/motorola-xoom-tablet-pc-32gb-09752543-pdt.html

32GB and an SD card slot for less than a 16GB iPad2

My missus is getting one for her birthday next week.

I know you said you weren't overly interested in the iPad but since you wondered about favourites, the iPad outsells any other tablet on the market by some margin.

As for it being any good, here's a few review snippets.

Blackberry play books are excellent value at the moment, really solid machines and very nice to use and they should soon be able to run android apps

Having said that I have just ordered an iPad as I love my phone and there are loads of games for the kids

I agree with wrecker, there isn't a right tablet, just the right one for you , so you pay your money and make your choice

I have a fire sale HP TouchPad that cost me £120 or something like that..

Let me put it this way. If I had paid £450 for it I would think it was a total waste of money, but as a convenient internet browser it's alright. Doesn't work properly for all sites but I can live with it.

I would need to have a really good reason to splash the cash on an Ipad. I already have an Iphone so don't really see the point tbh. (flame me if you like) 😀

My iPad 3 is due for delivery today.

It's not my third iPad, it's my first, so I'm quite interested to see what all the fuss is about.

One thing - I'd be really annoyed if I'd paid £120 for something that 'doesn't work properly'.

I'd actually be more annoyed if I'd paid £400+ for an Ipad3 that does little more than my phone. Enjoy your new toy 😀

Mind arrives today. I have a iPhone too, but there's stuff the pad will do better just because of the bigger screen, like using iPhoto. And reading books and magazines.

I love reading magazines on my iPad, don't find it heavy at all - never really got into reading books on it apart from graphic novels which are great imo. The Red Bull magazine app is incredible for free.

It's funny how everyone who didn't get an iPad always has to go on and on about how right they were in deciding not to. I wonder who they're trying to convince?

Definately have a play with them in a shop to see how they feel to use. Worth also doing a little internet searching to ensure they will actually do what you want. I got a Galaxy Tab 7 Wifi only for £250 when Bestbuy were shutting down. Didn't want to go bigger as a 10inch tablet is too big to stuff in the Camelbak when commuting. Has all the gizmos such as GPS for Endomondo, takes pretty much all the Android Apps, video/iplayer is good and digital Singletrack mags from the archive are pretty good to read. Ipad is also pretty good but for portability a little too big for what I use a tablet for.

I had a Xoom and got infuriated by constant "force closes" and apps that weren't optimised for tablets.

Sold

iPad on order

Have (work supplied original) iPad. Love it. If I were buying, I'd buy another - they are not significantly more expensive than the real rivals with similar screen size etc.

Have used various Android tablets and phones and they all felt a bit clunky in comparison. But that said they may not to you, so try a few but don't rule out an iPad just yet.

thanks everyone.

Bugger looks like I'm going to have to go shopping - I only ever go into town once a year to do the Christmas shopping (easy to with a bike shop is at the end of my road):-)
Looks like I may have to break that 4yr run 🙁

Would easily go for the Ipad if it didn't lock you into iTunes & Apple.
