When I was a kid looking out the window seemed to be enough, but telling a child they will get sweets if they see a donkey is very unfair, I never saw a single donkey, bastrds used to say 'have you seen the donkey yet?' and 'look there's one..oh you missed it', I was 14 before I realised you don't get donkeys in the middle of Glasgow.

We bought a ‘kid’ tablet initially that lasted 5 minutes, then upgraded our iPad and gave Jnr FD the old one which is now probably 8 yrs old

iPad - works out cheaper in long run

Amazon fire for kids. I've bought one each for ours. Good parental control, foamy case to protect and a good warranty. If you get them on a deal they are less than £100.

Aged 4 I recommend an amazon fire tablet with the kids subscription. Kept our five year old going all the way to the south of France.

You don't have to buy the kid specific model,(it's just a bundled package with an horrible case and the unlimited subscription for a year) check the returns/refurbs with a separate subscription to potentially save a few quid and get a better spec tablet.

So is Amazon fire an ongoing subs cost on top of the initial cap ex for the unit?

Another vote for a Fire, however we didn't bother with the kids edition ones as they were too restrictive (although I think our girls were a little older - around 6 - when they got theirs). And you can often get a standard Fire for very little (around £35) so they are a real bargain. We just got decent cases for them and they were fine.

With the Kids edition you are restricted to what content you can put on it so no CBeebies or anything like that either.

I am in the iPad camp with a really good child-proof case. Tried the Fire, other cheap Android tablets etc and they were all crap. None lasted more than 6 months.

The iPad I had before we got the other tablets ended up getting used more and is still doing a sterling job 4 years later. A couple of generations old one won't cost that much more than the alternatives.

Can you get Youtube Kids on Amazon these days? Seem to remember you can't? All my 4 year old wants to do is watch Youtube Kids.

We've had a couple of cheap Lenovo's and they work okay but a bit laggy. Both screens are cracked now and can't find a replacement. We also bought a refurb ipad 3 for similar money which was miles better and replacement screens are £10 from ebay. I managed to break something last time I changed the screen though so it's sat in a draw atm.

Given the choice though both my 7 and 4 year old will grab our ipad air. Even at that age they know the better product and I'll probably just get another at some point. I have Sky Protect insurance that covers a couple of tablets so if they break them they'll be replaced with no excess.

We've got YouTube kids and Iplayer kids, and Cbeebies apps on our Fire Kids. It's our second one after a few years of abuse, and we're really happy with it.
Subscription isn't necessary for it to work, it just gives you access to loads of free content.

We're in the 'refurb iPad' camp here: either the Apple refurb store or Argos outlet on eBay. With a good case iPads last ages, our kids current ones were bought in 2018 and I expect they'll be fine for a few more years yet.

As is usual, pics of the kids and I'll suggest the number of tablets I'm prepared to offer!

Just get what's in budget. For a youngster, a foam case is great - also helps them hold it - we've even got a Fire10 for the MIL, and that's in a foam case as she holds it with one hand.

Fire's are 'widescreen, ipads 4:3. ipads are much slicker in operation. Happily have either, but the Fire 10 is a bargain for the size of screen. We've an old Ipad2, 2 Fire 10's (one MIL's) and an ipad Pro 12.7 (daughters). All good, all different budgets.

If you've already got Prime, you've got a stack of content there for kids, add in Disney, quids in (and Star Wars for you).

Little Jungle has a selection of colouring books, activity books and crayons. Along with some small toys. That's kept her well entertained for the last few years (now 7). We've managed to dodge having to by a tablet for in the car as yet.

That and the old car games we used to play as children (eg eye-spy, although this was tricky until she got to reception age, before then we could necessarily see what see could. Polar bears aren't that common).

Amazon fire here. First HD8 kids edition lasted from 2017 (it still works fine) until this last Prime Day where I traded an old HD6 for £10 and 20% off a new HD10 kids edition that ended up costing £40 including the year of content access.

Dunno about YouTube kids but iplayer for kids is definitely on there.

The battery life is good, I've got two years no quibble replacement and I don't have to worry about what's viewed by little'un.

FFS standards people! This far in and nobody has accused the OP of being a monster for letting their kid look at a screen. Not even an “I don’t have any form of visual entertainment” brag. Disappointed by this.

Amazon Fire with a decent case is the way to go. Ours is about five years old and going strong

Tried a Fire kids - dreadful, slow bit of hardware. Grandma paid though, so it got used.

Then we handed down an ipad and the Fire never got looked at again. We even got gifted another, better, adult Fire and the kids aren't interested. Tried using it as an adult and it's pretty horrible.

Ipad FTW. Even old versions of it will run YT kids.

We got a Samsung tab when our wee one was four and still going (after 4 years), albeit on it's last legs now (software outdated for newer apps).

Got of of these cases and it's bomb proof; https://tinyurl.com/sc24spbz

I'm genuinely surprised at how the Amazon Fire is considered by some. My daughter is fussy about a lot of things but the Kids HD8 tablet has been faultless for about 4 years and the new HD10 was very well received.

I'm in the market for a tablet for a toddler, just needs to be able to run Netflix and Disney so shows can be watched or downloaded. I was looking at the Kids Fire 8 as they're quite cheap with a nice safe looking case. Any reason not too?

Check you can get the Netflix & Disney app for the Amazon Fire tablets.
It runs a heavily 'Amazon-ified' version of Android & many 'normal' apps are not available in the app store.

We got my 7 year old a Lenovo M10 3rd Gen from Currys for £130. You can set it up with Google Kids Space & I've seen some rubber-ised Kindle Fire style cases for it on Ebay.

Netflix and Disney should be fine on the Amazon devices as it's built into the Fire Sticks. If opting for a Fire, check you are getting it at a sale price as they vary just as much as Planet X Sales. Usual thing, with any tablet, check you can get decent cases for them - there is just about any case you'd like for Fire's though.

Our two have Fire tablets with the "kids" subscription.... runs iplayer, netflix, disney plus no bother.... I would factor in a MicroSD card too if you're travelling with it as lots of the apps will allow you to download programs/films to watch offline as the built in capacity is pretty restrictive.

As above Netflix and Disney+ work fine on Fire Kids tablets. Also, the SD card point is a good one. It's not that they don't have a lot of storage built in it's just the stupid way it creates a duplicate of everything when you create the kids profile.
