Not often I see ad's (have sky+) but caught an AD for the 'new' Blackberry Playbook at the weekend, and thought that looks good.
As in it had lots of multi-tasking app's.... even though I've yet to think that being able to leave a film playing and go play a game is a 'must' when purchasing a tablet.

Is there a real alternative to the ipad yet? As in what's "currently" out, not on the horizon. As tomorrow never comes, and the ipad 3 is on the horizon too...

I love the look of these of tablets, and these threads always bring out the mac-haters, so thought a Monday thread might help you relieve some stress...

The ad (or another version of it) seems to make a big thing of it running Flash which I would have thought would be a bad thing 😕
I've had an iPad2 for a couple of months now and I've not missed the ability to play flash at all.
I've also recently discovered the AirPlay facility which is brilliant and if you also have an Apple TV you will also be able to mirror everything on the iPad2 onto your mahoosive telly come this Autumn.
So, it's not just about Flash and multitasking.

Edit: Tablets in general are fab.

I believe The playbook was recalled in the US which resulted in a few large retailers dropping it altogether. Best not take that as gen, i might have not got the whole picture!

mate works at GE and they have just bought thousands of those playbook thingies...

thought they were more of a business tablet with a 7" HD screen, but not not many apps compared to the ipad

I popped to the shops at lunchtime today to look at tablets and saw the Blackberry.

The shop assistant said that the limiting factor on the Playbook was the lack of apps, although he did say that there were plans to get access to the Google Marketplace (where you can buy Andriod apps)

Otherwise there is a bewildering array of equipment out there for a wide variation of price which all seem to do pretty much the same thing.

For me, the main reson I would like a tablet is to play music via my Hi-Fi from the files stored on my NAS drive without firing up a big PC (whilst also being able to use it for other things such as surf, watch films/iPlayer, view photos etc), so sound quality is what I'm looking for. Unfortunately there is very little info on which tablets have the best sound anywhere (as far as I can see)

I've not seen anything in the tablet market yet that's a serious competitor to the iPad. They've got the drop on the competition and they're going to take some catching.

That said, I've never fully understood what the tablet market actually is, beyond "ooh, that's shiny and I wants it, my precioussssss..." We've got one in the house here and, whilst it's slicker than a greased weasel, it's a laptop without a keyboard. As a wise cat once said, big fat hairy deal.

+1 Cougar. My Mrs bought me an ipad for christmas. I love it and there are times where I don't know what I'd do without it, but somehow I just couldn't justify spending my hard-earned on one.

Slightly OT; I need to open a new business mobile contract next week and I'm debating about what to go for, I have an iphone 4 for personal use and currently use a BB (which I hate) for work so I'd like a phone that does everything so I don't have to carry both around. Anyone had a play on a Motorola Atrix, especially using it in the "netbook" guise? could just be all I need tbh or is it too much a jack of all trades? should I just buy an HTC desire?

I'm kind of on the lookout for a cheapo one (think £150ish) but not much looking good so far. CnM touchpad2 is £99 but mixed reviews. I just want a wifi web platform, don't need multi core processor, 3g, games and stuff.

HP Touchpad is launched soon, reports are looking quite favourable but as everyone knows it's going to be a difficult struggle against Apple.

(I work for HP btw, haven't had a play but will probably get one).

I've read very recently that the Blackberry tablets don't even have a mail app. Blackberry, famous for making mobile email a reality and dining off it ever since, don't have a mail app on their tablet 😆

As for "what is a tablet for?" the way I see it is "what is a laptop for?" For many people it is surfing the 'net, checking email, playing a few games, Facebook, Twitter, piccies etc. They don't need a keyboard and a battery that dies after 2 hours. Tablets are better than laptops for this kind of stuff. If you've already got a laptop it's an expensive addition to your hardware arsenal though.
