Crappy wet day at an xc race
Car has tailgate but thinking bit of extra protection would be nice
Was looking at some that go over open tailgate but guess I'm needing to close door when away racing so it would need taken down
Anyone?

I'm about to order a stitches and steel one for a lightweight side awning that will pack away small under the seat.

Kiravans do a small barn door awning, I'll be getting one for ard rock, and I'll use it with the big one I got from decathlon, which is a bargain.

Does it have to attach to the van? How about something like a normal event shelter/awning:-

Used a https://packashack.co.uk/ on my old berlingo and you can get them for a VW. However you do need to remove them to close the boot if you want to lock up.

Surely a roll out awning is best? Use a windbreak or get one which you can get side panels for if you want more protection.

The Stitches and Steel one looks nice, plus its got carbon poles for added bling.

Thinking maybe just a gazebo
Set up with 2/3 sides then you can open or close boot door
Ezy up style
Anyone recommendations?

Mine turned up last week. Not had a chance to put it up yet but the rail is very unobtrusive and doesn't whistle like I feared it might.

You'll be at least 250 for a decent quality one. Even at that, the one we paid that for hasn't lasted too well. Zips on doors are struggling, and the bag hasn't lasted at all.

We opted for the Coleman Event Shelter and two sides for our T4

Expensive option, but I have one of these on the side of the defender...

https://www.oztent.co.uk/acatalog/Foxwing-Awnings.html

You would need roofbars to attach it, or some other solution

Not a great pic I know but this is what we use for short trips:

Its a Decathlon tarp with a kador rail sewn into the end of it so it fits the awning rail on the van. Came with 2 poles but bought another two since to stop the middle from sagging when we have it setup as in the pic. All in it stands me at about £40...

Got this for overnight camps and attaches really easily obviously not great in windy conditions!

Does the boot open if a Coleman event shelter is over it?
Looks like the door isn't high enough?

you can get rails that accept a kador strip and they are fairly cheap. For transporters you can get them pre drilled to fit on the roof bar mounts. Then you can get either make or buy a tarp with a kador strip sewn in. Just kampers do one, it's ok but no good in the wind. I've just got the kiravans rail sail, which is much heavier duty, but not tried it yet (and it is $$$$$ for what you get).

Or you go the wind out awning route. But the tarp is more flexible and doesn't have a big thing permanently attached.

But this is for the side, not the tailgate

I use a packashack on my Fiat Doblos tailgate for exactly that purpose.

When I'm away from the car I close the tailgate and leave the packashack on the ground. It won't blow away as attached to wheels When I return I open the tailgate and 'instant shelter' 🙂

Anyone use a tent canopy?
Something like this

Yep, me. Had it all the time we've had the van (six years). Works great, just attach it to the van wheels on the other side.

Just bought an f45 for my van used off facebook

Keep an eye on gumtree and the Facebook self builders groups seen a few come up cheap

They make an f35 specifically for the vw

And if you have an awning rail to hook onto - try the fiamma caravanstore which is a roll out in a zip up canvas bag you can hang off the awning rail

Interested here too, been looking at the Stitches and Steel one too, been wondering though about how it would work with Thule roof bar feet.
