To all you Synology gurus.

I've just replaced my WD mycloud with a Synology NAS.

I'm trying to set it up for syncing files and I'm unsure which app to use. Synology website says use the cloud station for syncing files, but it doesn't appear in the package centre.

Any help appreciated

Syncing files to what? PC/Mac/iOS/Android/Dropbox/Backblaze?

Is it for media, general files or backup?

I’m no guru, still haven’t worked out a decent way to sync/backup my iPhone photos.

Looking to sync cad files/ folders from my pc to the Nas. And every time I create new cad drawings I want the Nas to recognise that and sync the folders.

Synology Drive Server looks like it does file synchronisation for you. (Assumes that you have either DSM 6.2 or DSM 7.0 installed on NAS).

How come sync rather than mount as a network drive? Is it a performance thing for CAD?

Thanks Sandwich will take a look. It appears cloud station has been retired.

@thebunk

Wanted it to sync as it compares the files on my pc to the ones on the Nas and keeps them up to date if any files are added or amended. Saves me doing a backup every week.
I used that feature on the WD mycloud and it worked well

I’m sure you are aware but sync isn’t a backup, yes it’ll save you from a drive failure or accidental delete. It doesn’t protect from malware or ransomware.

@captmorgan

What would you suggest instead?

Back-up from the NAS using Hyper Backup to at least 3 places (online, portable disc and physically off-site). Jobs a good 'un.

Backup using file history to the NAS setup as an external drive.  Then backup the NAS to a pair of hard drives that you store in your garage or somewhere else or to something like Amazon Glacier although the recovery time can be painful

If your NAS is big enough you can even use a hyperbackup copy internally as a bit more protection against ransomware as the hyperbackup copy won't be exposed on your network

Thanks for all the advice.
Looks like I need to change the way I'm using a Nas.
I've always backed up to an external drive in addition to using the previous Nas to sync files.
I'm sure I'll be pecking your heads again once I get my head around the Synology software

So Synology isn't the study of employment rates?

it’s synology drive server you’re after (and the client for whatever you’re using) - it replaced cloud station and works well
