The kids are starting to show an interest in games . I’m thinking of buying the Xbox or the switch .
What’s people’s experiences of both ?
I need to have a good selection of kids games but maybe somthing I can jump in to as well .
I got a switch for the kids last year. Loads of age appropriate games for them. I use it to play all the classics from my youth like Sonic, Doom, Quake and Unreal Tournament. There are also quite a few new games which are good.
I have both, well, a One S at any rate but same difference.
The decider for me would be age. My daughter is right at home on the Switch but took longer to get to grips with the XBox. Plenty of kid friendly games on the Switch and the portability is a massive plus. Metroid Dread has been great fun if you're familiar with the series.
What console do their friends have?
Be aware, the Xbox One X and the Xbox Series X are very different consoles.

This.

Also, this.
We have both.
Switch all day long for younger kids. Games are expensive but if you buy physical copies they hold value very well and can be sold/traded in.
yeah how old are they? my 6 year old plays on my switch loads (and don't underestimate the value of it being portable for long flights/drives) - I think a kid 10 years older would prefer the xbox. Switch has lots of family games which is nice too
Thanks everyone .
They are 9 and 6 so I’m thinking the switch would be better for the variety of games suitable for them .
I’m not sure what their friends are on if anything but I want to try and limit the socials side of it for a bit.
I think the Nintendo plus thing looks good with its back catalogue. .
Raspberry Pi + Retropie + some usb controllers.
My kids love the Retro games (Mario Kart 64 especially!) You can get literally thousands of games including the whole Nintendo back catalogue, and PS1 games, etc.
Switch is great for kids. Buy physical games and sell them on as and when. Plenty of great games and portable too. Our kids love it although we have a PS4 too now they’re older. And a PS5 coming soon although no one knows yet!
Switch all day. Well, probably not all day as i’m quite mean with the parental controls, but yeah a switch will be awesome for that age. We have an ASD 9 year old who is OBSESSED with jurassic work alive (as am I, it’s properly addictive), a football focused 7yr old who wants me to get her fifa23 and the little 4 year old who just wants to play mariokart all day.
If I had more cash I’d be getting one for myself to take away the tedium of business travel.
Had both but they lost interest in the Switch games pretty quickly (boys). The portability element is good though and I know other parents who say their kids love it. Xbox is great for parental controls with an app to block/unblock things remotely, control spending, add money etc and the ability to link it all up with a parental Microsoft account - you will want this as they get older trust me! Nintendo have some of this but it was very fiddly IIRC (might be better now I suppose - this was about 8 years ago.).
Wii U is worth a look if they’re younger, it plays all the old Wii games (available for buttons) and quite a few of the big Switch titles like Zelda BOTW and Mario Kart 8 are wiiu ports anyway.
Beyond that, Xbox or PS based on what their mates have.
