I'm very attached to my legs, they let me do stuff like walk and cycle and move freely. I spent a few years with compromised mobility due to an arthritic hip (now sorted thank goodness) so I just cannot understand how anyone would want to be in his situation.

Surgeon jailed after amputation of own legs
I just cannot understand how anyone would want to be in his situation.
I'm tempted to say 466,000 reasons - but in reality I'm absolutely stumped.
I'd happily amputate his head with a spoon, given half the chance.
My mother died from sepsis following internal injuries from a car crash, and over a period of time having both her lower legs and one of her arms amputated until we basically had to allow the doctors to withdraw treatment and let her go.
"It seems to have been a long-standing ambition of his," he said.
Chapeau to the prosecution 😂
There must be easier ways to apply to be an astronaut. I watched a documentary on body dismorphia years ago. It’s a disturbing mental illness. One sufferer wanted a below the knee amputation. Was adamant it had to be that leg at that point, and highly distressed. But cured after the operation - think of the ethical dilemma. Another removed their leg with a shotgun and left the medics to clear up the mess. Again their mental health improved dramatically. Neither were after the insurance money.
Bit of a tangent, but WTF?

Worth reading the article to find out why they jailed an otherwise upstanding citizen.
Out in a limb this guy
Definitley a thing, folk will have any and everything cut off, willingly.
Reading about it is not for the faint hearted Seriously, don’t even think about it if you are in any way squeamish
EDIT, see the chap in the article I linked to is mentioned in the OP article
The hospital are taking the stance that it did not impact on his patients care, but the guy gets sexual gratification from amputation and is a vascular surgeon..... makes you think.
Bet if he'd have got the insurance payout, he'd have gone out and got legless!
makes you think
I’ve had dealings with a few vascular surgeons over the past 10 years (including a free and frank exchange of ideas about how they shouldn’t cut bits of my foot off). I’d rather not think about it, thanks.
Knew a guy that had a leg amputated above the knee after a workplace accident. I am about certain he had it done so he could get the 100% disability payout from his employer, mainly because he claimed he could not walk or climb stairs, but had photos on FB of him out kayaking and walking without sticks on a gravel beach.
He took those down relatively quickly.
Read that article last night. Found most of it just extremely weird/disturbing. What a fkd up world we live in.
so I just cannot understand how anyone would want to be in his situation.
Severe mental illness
This has been the most shocking thread I’ve read (and then the related bbc article) that I can ever remember.
Aw Leave him alone, it's normative determinism...Hopper.
I can understand someone feeling that there’s something wrong with a particular limb, possibly because of phantom pain or discomfort, and wishing to have it removed, but sexual gratification is absolutely beyond my comprehension. 🤷🏼♂️
A friend works for the Met and was involved with the eunuchmaker case this is linked to. She said it was pretty harrowing seeing the pictures of what people had chosen to have done.
