You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
We did a bike tour of the Western Isles a few years back - had a fantastic time but as someone who also enjoys a surf it was quite a frustrating place to be without the means to get out into the waves. Mile after mile of empty beaches and lovely breaks. Since then I've had a real hankering to go back there and surf, but it would be a shame to miss out on the joy of exploring by bike too.
Since then we've had a little boy so may need to defer that trip for a while but I'm wondering at the practicalities of combining a shortish family tour with surfing and maybe planning a mini-adventure around this in the spring.
So... to practicalities. Having used them previously I reckon conventional bike surf racks are really only suitable for short trips...a cargo trailer may be an option but go to bear in mind weight of camping kit too. There is also the question of wrecking my decent board... so I reckon taking a full size board is out.
I picked up a beater board a couple of months back which I reckon could be the ideal vehicle for this - it's basically an oversized bodyboard - twin fin, foam top, and really light. Great fun but sketchy as all hell to ride, particularly as I normally ride a 7' Magic Carpet. I reckon I could rig something to fit it to a rack without any problems though and it would easily sit on top of other stuff on a standard cargo trailer.
Another minimalist option I'm considering is a handplane and fins for some body surfing - one of these is on my Christmas list alread 😉 :

Anyway just wondering if anyone on here has done successfully managed a UK surf trip by bike and wants to share their stories...
No, but I did once ride 45km with a full-size kayak strapped to the side of a Surly Big Dummy. I appreciate the Dummy is an expensive thing for a specific purpose, but it is amazingly possible to travel perfectly comfortably with an odd load.

@BigDummy .... now that is cool. A Big Dummy would round off my Surly collection nicely (I run a 1x1 and KM at the moment), but sadly I don't think the funds will stretch. How well did it cope with the hills?
Jambo - inflatable board also a good call. I was looking at the Waterman ones which seem to get pretty good reviews. Quite like the look of this:
