I'll give it a go but I bet I'll fall asleep during the 3rd quarter.

Who are you cheering? Who's going to win?

For me, I'll be cheering the Seahawks on as I love a good defensive team. I think the Patriots will be too good for them this year though. Not sure their defence is as ferocious as last year.

I'll be staying up, eating too much and supporting an arbitrary team!

Well, tbf, I do quite follow the ol' NFL regular season, until whenever the Steelers get knocked out (EDIT: which was beyond the regular season this year). It's usually not difficult to choose a side based on either an admiration for what one does or a dislike of the other. For me, it's both this year. 🙂

I'll be cheering for Seattle, as I don't like cheats.

I'm not reminding anyone that predicted Green Bay beating Broncos in the SB, oh no. 😉

Anyway, as for cheats Cougar, the Patriots did nothing wrong, Because winning. Y'know. Sometimes you gotta go what you gotta do. Because WINNING. Yeah, WINNING! (Yes, Belichick is a ****.)

Much as I'd like Seattle to win, I think NE will hammer them, biggest winning margin in superbowl history type hammering. What time is kick off?

2330 I think.

It'll go some to beat last year's margin of 43-8 (again, I think).

I shall be staying up until I fall asleep, and supporting the Pats because I don't like that icky green bit on the Seahawks uniform.

The cheats thing doesn't bother me, I reckon the NFL is so success oriented that it's made up of teams which have been caught cheating, and teams which haven't (been caught).

Up early with the little one so doubt I'll be staying up, so Sky + then avoid the internet. At least I'm off tomorrow so I can pick it up pretty much first thing

I'd like to see the Seahawks win, just don't like the Patriots for some reason, but I can see a 30 point margin for NE to win

Imagine...a competition that's success orientated. It's shocking, I know. 🙂

The thing is, the Pats (well, Belichick) have (plenty of) previous. It's not like he's been caught being naughty just this once. But he gets away with it.

Go Pats!

Well I'm not shocked dd, I just believe they would all do anything they think they can get away with, you appear charitable enough to think otherwise. As you say, Belichick has previous and being caught didn't hurt him or his team enough to put him off trying it on again.

Right. In a nutshell:

You have four attempts, or "downs" to move the ball ten yards (or more) - hence "first and ten". You'll see a CGI line on the TV showing where they need to get to (it's yellow on Sky). If the first attempt gets say four yards, the next go will be second and six. If they then lose two yards, it'll be third and eight, and so on.

If they're successful, the downs reset and it's another first and ten. If they're not, the other team get the ball. If they've not gone very far, they may use the fourth down to "punt" or hoof it as far as possible so that the other team aren't starting near to the goal line.

To be fair, a live game isn't the best introduction, as it's very stop-start. Recorded footage will cut out the downtime.

think ive got that bit,
the camera could do with being a bit wider so i can see the bigger picture

first question. 4xquarters of 15mins = 5hr game?
how long is halftime gonna be?

i want to know whats going on before i go to bed, as then i will only have the radio.

actually first question was, how to they do the yellow line?

looks a little like rugby league to me with all the downs bit.

It's CGI for the telly. Clever, isn't it.

Half time should be 12 minutes IIRC. 4x15 yes. It takes as long as it takes, the clock stops if the ball is taken out of bounds or there's a penalty (or a timeout).

Also, depending on how many time outs the sides have left, and how close it is, the final quarter can go on forever.

Y'know, if the Seahawks don't get in their groove soon, they could be on the end of the kind of hammering they handed out last year. They haven't even had a first down yet.

actually yeah *bookmarks for reference
still think it would be easier if the coverage actually allowed me to see what was going on?

we are mid q2, judging by the screen behind the, er, be nice, er, 'presenters' is showing an empty field
what are they all doing?
is there no live play, or is it all 'set plays' essentially

still there is a whole host of lycra and some eye make-up, whats not to like

Broadly, they're set plays (for Offence) yes, every player will be moving / running to where they should be (or at least, trying to). But they can change on the fly if it looks like the Defence have guessed what they're doing. If you can hear the Quarterback shouting, he's communicating what they're supposed to be doing.

soobalias 😀

It's pretty much all set plays, yes. Like violent chess. Another one on timekeeping, if the play ends on the field, the clock keeps ticking. If it's run out of bounds, the clock stops. Again, time outs can mix this up a bit. And in Q4, the clock always stops with 2 mins remaining (the two minute warning).

Resetting for the next play, and discussing tactics / plays. They're allowed 40 seconds between downs to do that (though whether or not they chose to do so will depend in part on whether the clock's running or not).

Worth also remembering that while these guys mostly look like big brutes, they need to know bloomin hundreds of different combinations of plays. And the defence has to figure the opposition's out. They're no fools yo!

Hmmm, I take it back. One long pass to Matthews seemed to give them a big shot of momentum. I hope C4 don't read my earlier tweet. 😳

Actually, helmet offences, (now now) like grabbing the face mask, normally carry pretty serious penalties.

My absolute favourite foul is "Unnecessary Roughness". 😆

For soobalias, this article from the Beeb is a slightly shorter one than the NFL's to which Cougar linked.

How have the Seahawks gone in level after those two quarters? They've hardly had the ball apart from that drive at the end of Q2. Just heard it - 80 yards. 5 plays. 29 seconds. Jeez.

Just watched a few highlights online. Quite a bizarre finish, extraordinarily poor play choice from Seahawks. To lose the Superbowl like that is extra-ordinary

With a running back that good why oh why would you throw it? At least fake the throw & let Wilson do his thing?

Anyway, entertaining game for a neutral & half time show was better than normal
