Phht amateur !

You'd get chucked out of the park with anything under 8% by the local drinkers

There will be a few on this forum who know the delights of getting off the mountain and sharing a bottle or 5 of nicely chilled Basque farmhouse cider and a few pintxos while watching the villagers play pilota in the fronton.

I'll concede that English scrumpy is tastier, but nothing quite hits the spot like that.

Pah.

Since the minimum alcohol pricing commenced up here, it's all about cans of Dragon soup, frosty jacks is merely a misty eyed memory.

frosty jacks is merely a misty eyed memory.

I've a feeling it'll be a misty eyed hangover.
Normally drink Stowford or Autumn Gold , frosty is a tad to strong for volume drinking in the sunshine.

Mmmm, I've just had 3 cans of Strongbow!!

I'd normally buy nice ciders in the summer but just bought a load of cheap cans from supermarket for the long weekend. It'll do.

just bought 20l of some somerset cider for 40 quid.

It's slipping down deceptively well

I do like a proper cider, but the local stuff was £75 for the same amount.

Well now a subject close to my heart hailing from the home of the cider apple (Somerset if you didn't know 😉) not being able to get to Roger Wilkins' for obvious reasons next best 5 minutes down the road on the bike to Hecks' . A Gallon of Kingston Black 6.5% for £9 😎 Proper job 'tis ! And just for the record the only fruit that cider should be made from is APPLES ! All your poncy Rhubarb , Blackcurrant etc etc is just wrong !!!!'Also don't mention Strongbow round these parts !

Most of the time I would never remotely even consider drinking cider, on account of it being tramp juice

But when the suns out and I’ve just been out for a long walk, I got back today and had a hankering for it. Our local office is still open so I nipped down to ‘shop for essential items’

Also: can you still buy K cider? Not seen it for years.

When we first used to go out drinking in Manchester, our first drink of the evening would be a green nasty.

Pint glass, bottle of K, topped up with Lowenbrau Pils, double blue bols and a vodka. Turned the pint bright green. Happy days 😃

And also just for the record, cider is 100% fermented apple juice, not the flavoured glucose syrup muck most mainstream "cider" brands are made out of.

This was my thinking, but thanks to CV19 I couldn't safely reach the ale in Morrisons (aisle choked with old dears) so just grabbed 3 for £5 of the more accessible cider. It went down far, far to easily for stuff nearly as strong as wine.

I chose 3 dry ciders, aspalls and some other stuff. Great in the fun, very tasty and not just fizzy sweet apple piss that put me off in the past.

Curious cider down here in the SE England - Kentish Ruben & Bramley apples.

'tis lovely.

(nothing quite beats the memory as a youngster being allowed Breton cider on our family campimng trips to France. Drunk nicely chilled, sat in the sun with sandy toes, usually whilst pigging out on moule frites. Sigh...)

@tdog I’ve no idea, this was from my friend Steve - see Steve’s Garage thread- he was given it on his final trip back to Normandy and it comes from the village of Rots. I’m drinking it tonight in honour of him and his comrades who didn’t come home. It’s really very nice

Gwatkins everytime. Local cider for local palates? I have to think that’s a good thing, because tasting the supermarket belchpopfizzysugarstuff is not even like real cider at all!

Dunkertons organic is fantastic stuff. I used to buys Heney’s, Sheppy’s, Aspall, etc, but Dunkertons, especially the premium reserve or the Court Royal is simply outstanding.

You found anywhere local selling it?
Though i've lost almost 10KG since The House has been closed so might not be good to get back on it...
I can see this happening again when they re open.😵

Burrow Hill medium or Ham Hill Early Drop or Bop Drop. Burrow Hill at the moment as Ham Hill don't do online orders. Hazy Jane when I really do have to get it from supermarket.

First stop every trip to Somerset is Pip's Railway Carriage cafe for the best breakfast you'll ever taste and then next door to the Trading Post to stock up on Early/Bop Drop!

Stu try your local corner shops/offies. A few around wolves have it on tap or you can buy 330ml glass bottles (3 for £5 at the Cally)

I used to live in pretty much the next village along, High Bickington, my folks still do so I’ll definitely drop in next time and get some from these guys.

I normally stop in at Sams cider in Winkleigh for my Apple fix.
They make some lovely drinks.

You people are animals! I was in Asda the other day and noticed they have about 15 types of cider. Once the sun comes out I'm going to buy one of each and try them all out

Bit of a thread resurrection / PSA..

Westons Vintage 8.2% (the good stuff!) is currently discounted on Amazon - voucher for £4.80 off 12 bottles brings it down to £1.60 a bottle (£1.50 if you use S&S to get an extra 5%) which is less than the heady old days of Co-op 3 for a fiver!

Does anyone make their own on here? I moved to a house with a few garden apple trees and have spent the last 7 years learning how to make a decent drop. The main issue is you only have one time a year to practise but I'm pretty pleased with this year's. To compensate for the lack of cider apple varieties (and before my three Dabinett trees start yielding fully) I've learned how to store and macerate the apples to keep acidity low and to rack multiple times to leave as much residual sugar as possible (you can achieve this if your apple trees are old and low in nutrients). Always letting wild yeasts do their thing (albeit with a low does of sulphite at the start) brings the best results too.

Know a thing or two. Have assisted friends in the making of local single varietal and blended ciders and perrys. Some commercial.

What passes as ‘cider’ from the regular shops and pubs these days is shocking! Like some kind of apple-flavoured lager, all bubbles and bolx.

See also all the big brand chocolate nowadays. Like some kind of chocolate-flavoured set vegetable fat and sugar.

Anyway. Rant over!

Gwatkins or Malvern Gold, chilled, not too cold. That’ll do more than nicely.

Local cheese, crusty bread and chutney on the side 🙂

I've just got back after 4 hours out on the hybrid around the villages below the Ridgeway. Golly that was fun and only 3 pints of weak but cold lager on the route.
I'll walk to the next village for a couple of Abingdon Bridges around 8:30. Ham and cheese omelette with peas first though.
