I loved my Oakley wire frame ones (I think they were square wires) but they were lost, replaced with something else I can't remember but they are now badly scratched.

I can get Square Wires for £88 online I think, but the Five Squared are only £50 ish at their cheapest. What else should I consider? This is for casual use, I would prefer something like the above mentioned Square Wires but also find half jackets rather comfortable. I'd rather spend less, and I'd go for other brands but every time I try them I am never that satisfied with fit or optical quality somehow.

I'd also prefer to try them on, so something available on the High St would be nice. Any tips?

ALL sunglasses in the UK are UV400 (from poundland to designer boutique) so give good eye protection, higher priced glasses will basically be optically better, the best sunglasses you can get (different league to Oakley) are Maui Jims and Serengeti their lens technologies are far superior. If you are on a budget and just want plano, dont discount your local opticians any frame on their shelf pretty much can be made into a sunglass prices will obviously vary depending on the frame chosen.

Hawkers, they are polarised and only £22 a pair, its a no brainer.

Oakley's are ok if you wear short sleeve shirts and use a bluetooth ear piece.

Decathlon also worth a look, their polarised start at £15.99

This is a very good point.

I am a contact lens subscriber so I qualify for some tidy discounts on frames too at Specsaver.

Personally I'd avoid polarised glasses, makes it difficult to read your iPhone or iPad (if you hold them sideways) and in my car i can't read any of the info displays (or the petrol pumps in Morrisons)

Funny, goes against the advice my optician gave me for driving sunglasses. I take mine off when I'm filling my car 😉

I can only tell you my experience with Oakley Polarised lenses. I wear mine the majority of the time when I'm outside. They do cut out glare though but they are not compatible with many LCD displays sadly.

Indeed there are the odd screen you can't read but the advantages far out weigh the disadvantage of having to move them from your face from time to time.

Petrol station, surely this is a given as you are in the shade?

I've recently got some new sunnies which happen to have polarised lenses.

Driving with them on has been a revelation! Cuts through reflections and glare and are brilliant when you're driving through dappled shade / sunlight.

Polarised glasses made it impossible to see the reversing camera in my car. So I got into the habit of flipping them up when reversing. I still do it now even when I don't have polarised shades and I don't even have a reversing camera!

£6 Bolle safety specs if you don't want polarized 😉

£20-£30 for polarized.

Better still if using them for riding and don't want to keep shelving out for a fancy brand name when you smash them up. Though I find full shades too dark when in the trees. A sunny day riding somewhere exposed though I might wear them. Otherwise tinted like Bolle ESP to filter blue light.

You can usually get some good Cébé sunglasses on Amazon at low prices

Just look on their own website for the dimensions e.g. 55/40-125 and compare against your existing frames

I hardly ever do that, so it's not a worry.

Probably my third pair of sunglasses in 20 years.

Julbo is my go to brand now. My last Oakleys actually fell to pieces in my hand one day. The frame fell apart and cracked. Most bizarre.

Julbos are tough and we'll priced

Do you have a heritage Italian car (sic) to go with them?

If you're bothered about optical quality try Revos.

I've settled on Vans Spicoli's. At around 20 quid a piece you don't have to be too precious with them or too upset when the inevitable happens.

Me and the Mrs have got about 4 seats between us now. They come in infinite colour combos and I just got a satin black set for myself.

Plus they're named after Jeff Spicoli so it's a win win

Hawker sunglasses tend to have big big lenses - not ideal if you have a smaller face. I keep a set in the car, and they have been ok .. but they do look the cheap sunglasses they are.

My personal favourites at moment are Ray-Ban New Wayfarer sunglasses ... smaller lenses fit my face better, and they look as cool on the bike as off.

You do all know that if you can't see an LCD screen when wearing polarised lenses you can just tilt your head a bit, right?
