Hi
Off to watch Jason Manford end of January at the Sunderland empire.
We’re looking for decent beer pubs that serve nice pub food. We will be there all afternoon so anything else worth doing to pass a bit of time would also be appreciated.
Regards
Mike
It's not 'Sunderland' It's SUNLAAAN!

I think you can get the train to Sunderland for the gig and get back out after
Go to Durham for the afternoon, lovely pubs and food, best cathedral in the world, Castle as well if you can arrange a tour of that.
Durham is a good call 👏🏻👏🏻
Wer'e going to Sunlan next November to see something at the Empire but I think we'll stay over in Durham.
Mainly cos that's where wer'e originally from & that It's a zillion times nicer that Sunlan. (which admittedly, isn't saying much)
Durham rocks & is undoubtedly one of the most underrated cities in the UK.
Durham is a nice place to spend and afternoon. And then go home.
any excuse to post this 😀
I went last year to see League of Gentlemen - we found a few quite nice bars around the Empire (but don't recall the name of any of them off the top of my head) but we did end up in Spice Empire for a curry which was very good.
Edit - just done a quick Google and we had a few beers in The Engine Room. We didn't eat there but they do food and it seems to get pretty decent reviews on Trip Advisor and it was a pretty nice place to sit and have a few beers.
Lol at that video. My daughter at uni in Newcastle has just finished with her boyfriend. He’s from billingham and goes to Sunderland uni. Lives in Newcastle though as it’s preferable to commute 2 hours a day than live in sunlan.
Have a guess what his name is

Its actually an alright place to live ..( I did for 12 years ) ..like any city it has its good and bad areas ..
The folks were quite tolerant of a Newcastle supporting outsider and the banter was good ..
The best thing to come out of my time there was my daughter ( now 27 ) and still lives in the area ..
Take a stroll along the seafront at Seaburn ..just a mile or two from the city centre ..
The Engine Room is a good shout - it's literally round the corner from the Empire. We drank a lot in Fitzgeralds which is the other side of the Empire, but again only 200 yards or so walk.
Sunderland, sadly, is a bit under the shadow of Newcastle - all the funding seems to end up there so its sucked the life out of the town centre with the MetroCentre shopping centre and Newcastle shops taking the business and money, Sunderland town centre now seems to be pound shops.
Grew up on the north side of the city (with the nice beach) - the metro train service desn't really get you close if you wanted to nip out.
If you want a bit of 'culture' the Glass Centre is worth a visit (it's free) - its not too far a walk, bit of pain by bus as, due to the lovely one way system you'd have to get a bus out of town, then get anotherbus back halfway into town again! Free parking though, if you're driving.
Callum of course. Clue in the video
My father in law is from Sunderland. He seems to have an extraordinarily large chip on his shoulder about growing up there. Life was evidently hard when he grew up but somehow it was special hard because it was Sunderland.
In spite of its importance to him he loves it so much he hasn’t lived there for over 50 years.
We did this a year ago. If you’re just there for the afternoon I’d probably head to somewhere like the Quayside Exchange.
You could engage the locals in a vigorous discussion about Brexit to pas the time.

I can vouch for that.
My favourite pub is The Dun Cow is and it's literally right opposite the Empire. You might even bump into the less famous half of Athletico Mince. Try a pint of Jakehead.
If you want a pub meal then the Ivy House has just been refurbished and does good burgers, chunky chips, pizzas etc. Isis is worth a look. The Funky Indian used to be good if you like stuff like that. All easy walking distance.
Most other places are standard lager and trebles and Sky Sports.
Sunderland isn't actually that bad there's just nothing there. It's more tragic than dirty or dangerous or anything. Loads of nice places to live if you don't want anything from life.
I live in Sheffield and my only regret is that I didn't move away 10 years earlier.

Ahh the Brexit chestnut again.
Unfortunately, most Mackems probably won't (even yet) have a clue what 'brexit' actually is!
Thanks for all the suggestions.
