I quite like Rocksalt for coffee and light meals - lots of bakery and salad stuff and a Turkish twist on some of savouries. Physically a fair bit bigger than a lot of Leith cafe venues so easier to get seated/served on busier days maybe (that might be an opinion tinged by being revived from hangovers on a Sunday after I've stumbled out of the Holiday Inn by the Turkish breakfasts)

if you are down there the Royal yacht gets pretty good reviews, never been myself but talking to those that have they seemed to of enjoyed it.

Yep, we did.

As a Leith resident I would probably avoid the Royal Yacht - it is kinda interesting but not really worth the money and is accessed through Ocean Terminal which is the haunted site of a dying shopping centre. It's a bit desolate round there.

Rocksalt is nice as mentioned, as is Nobles, both on the same street.

The Roseleaf Cafe Bar is nice as well, and do good food if you're looking. Great fancy Scotch eggs.

William & Johnson inside the little mini arcade thing at Customs House is very nice for coffee albeit quite insufferably hipster (like me). You can sit on the side of the canal basin and drink it if the weather is nice.

Just walking around the Shore area is really nice tbh. It will be a very different feel to the rest of the town as the festival hasn't yet reached down here but still very nice. If you fancy a drink if you are that way inclined, there are loads of great pubs too; Teuchters Landing for example which has nice outdoors seating over a bridge.

You can get the tram down from the centre of town to the Shore - just make sure you buy your ticket before you get on from the machine at the platform - it is £2 and contactless, but *can't buy one on board* and they will fine you £10 if they catch you. Otherwise you could just walk down Leith Walk for 30 minutes and you'll be there.

Second the Roseleaf - excellent food and drink in a nice wee place. Coffee from Relish is good too. And yes, mooching around (weather permitting) is quite nice.

Some great stuff here - we did Britannia about 10 years ago and it was good, but no desire to go back now we are child free.

We have tram tickets in hand,  staying at the SHA at Haddington Place.

I'm astonished that a chain waxing demo isn't one of the main attractions at the Fringe, so I'll just have to hope Dara O'Brien lives up to the hype (he does, saw him on his last tour).

If the weather is nice, go to Portabello instead for the beach.

@intheborders - if the weather is really nice that will also be half the city's plan and you'll never get out the queue for a coffee! The queue for the pizza place or the coffee stall is like 30 people deep on nice days.

yeah, was there the other week, pizza was pretty average, at best...   Seems to get great reviews, maybe the chef was having a bad day.. 🙁

Portobello can be painfully ' Hipster central' ,good if you like mutts on the beach,there's usually hundreds on a Sunday *

If you want some really good seafood I can recommend Fishers in Tower Street opposite the Malmaison otherwise there's not really that much in Leith other than a few hipster cafes and it appears to be massively overhyped.

I went to the Britannia ages ago, I enjoyed looking around. I found the integration of two very idiosyncratic institutions (the Royal Navy and the monarchy) very interesting, and the prosaic nature of some of the Royal quarters, which were sometimes furnished in ways that wouldn't have looked out of place in my grandparents' homes, were similarly fascinating.

Eh?  Do you have your eyes closed?  Dozens of pubs and restaurants with some really interesting places.  Hipster cafes tho for sure.  Toast is my fave particularly if you can get the window seat.

I said the beach, go to Tesco/Sainsburys/Asda on your way there for food 'n drink.

Nephew A, and Nephew B are moving to Edinburgh Fountainbridge in work placements. Looks pretty good, plenty of coffee houses and cake emporiums.

Port of Leith distillery has an excellent bar, and apparently you can have a tour too. Right next to Britannia.

If feeling energetic then walk down water of Leith' to the shore and tram back up. Water of Leith' is fabulous
