Hopefully someone will be able to help me out here by pointing me to a handy online tool rather than having to calculate sun paths, lat/long, azimuths etc.

There is a house. The house is the southern of a pair of semi detached houses. The front of the house facing West-ish and the rear garden is roughly to the east of a house. There are no houses particularly close to the southern end of the house, but a few fences and trees that could possibly be adjusted. There are houses the other side of the road to the west of the house.

Given that the rough plan of the house, location and orientation are plotted on most online mapping tools if you zoom in close enough (even an appropriate 3D model); is there any way to quickly model which hours the sun will be in different areas of the rear garden throughout the year? Ideally on to which I could add the heights of vertical obstructions to see how houses, fences and trees cast shade to make it more precise.

Yes, SunCalc is good. It will show you where the sun will be on particular date/time, and can calculate shadow lengths.

Or there's a few phone apps that can do the same thing. And have a live view mode, so you could stand in the garden, and it will show where the sun will be. I like Sun Surveyor. https://www.sunsurveyor.com/

Ive used lumos which is an ios app to do the same thing for a new house, I didnt take it as far as putting in heights etc but it was fine for me. Did sun/moonpaths etc, you can alter time date etc to see the effect at different times of year.

Only drawback was you needed the paid version to move the map, otherwise it’s location based. Not a problem for me as i could just go round to the house, or if you're doing it for your own house. Not as useful if you’re buying a house 200 miles away.

Slightly leftfield choice but the TPE app is well worth a look and useful if you are a photographer. Does cost a bit though so not worth the money if you are only going to use it once.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't have access to the house, but it is in the same town as me, unoccupied and I can get access to 2 sides of it on public land, so will have a play with various apps once the sun returns.

The Web links look good, but of the free apps I have found on Android Play Store "Sun Position Demo" looks to give me what I need within the free demo version so will give that a go before trying the next one. Once calibrated with GPS, accelerometer etc it appears that you can hold the phone up and it will show sun paths in augmented reality on the screen.
If needed then I'll pay for one.
