2 boys aged 4 and 6
1 wife almost middle aged
1st 2 weeks of August
Okay so original plan was/is to go to Scotland for a week with the camper van and then a week in The Lake District in a friends cottage, all in for two weeks I guestimate £1200 all in food/petrol/cottage etc all in.
So been looking at alternatives and this is what I've found...
10 days in Ibiza/spain/greece fully inclusive £350 per person £1400 plus say £500 spending etc
or
Drive to the alps 10 days in a ski chalet in Les Les Contamines rent is about £260ish plus going out petrol food accom on way I reckon same as going to Scotland £1200 ish (taking car not Camper van)
Scotland in the van with the kids would be great but weather could be cak ! same as Lake district all weather dependant
Package holiday never been on one just seems dull...and at that price not going to be great is it ?
Alps would be fun but lots of driving etc not sure what we'd do there !
Any advice gladly taken...
With your boys at that age I'd not be relishing a drive to the Alps.
Package holiday - any idea what you will do once you get there?
Not done the Scotland option, but have extensive experience of Spanish beach holidays 🙂
And they're great with smaller kids - they usually have a kids club you can dump them in for a break during the morning, then spend the afternoon together on the beach or whatever. If the budget stretches to it you could always hire a car for a day or two to get out of the hotel, or chose somewhere that's got public transport - we went to Santa Sussana north of Barcelona and got the train into town a couple of times.
thanks for replies....
and a bit of a bump
I love Scotland, so am biased.
As you say, weather could be cak, meaning a holiday here could be a couple of weeks stuck in camper van listening to the steady drum of rain on roof,
BUT, if the weather's in your favour, you'll see stunning scemery, gorgeous sunsets (and sunrises if you get up early enough) and long, long days.
So, of your options, Scotland's either the best or the worst, depending on the weather.

We managed to drive to Italy and Swiss alps with kids of that age (but they were used to travelling from very young and can read etc in the car with no travel sickness). You obviously need to break the journey - Rotterdam to Freiburg was about an hour too far at that age....
Central Europe is pretty hot to drive through in summer - we have always wished for air con at some point on every trip through Germany.
Scotland
Summer Isles, park up around Auchiltibuie and this is your morning view. The nearest hotel has a Michelin star and sells the same food in the bar as the restaurant.

Cracking part of the world that Chubby we stay at Glenuig every other year.
TBF - that's a helluva drive too!
The journey is the destination. I regularly head up that way for no other reason than the drive/ride, So switch off and enjoy the rolling scenery
Scotland. West coast. Every year as a kid loved every minute. If you don't like the weather wait 10 minutes it will change.
Scotland is rubbish, if you must give it a couple of years and it will be proper foreign! 😀
350 all inclusive is not going to be "brilliant" in beefa. I love the place but would be wary of piss heads at the place for that price.
We did 9 days in Scotland three years ago, kids both loved it. 8 and 5 at the time. We started in Dumfries then headed west for a week in port William. Loads of stuff to do, castles, bar b's on deserted beaches, cream of Galloway, tattoo at Kirkcudbright. Prob best holiday we've had.
