Hello,
Looking for advice/recommendations please... i have been away from the motherland for going on 15yrs now (counting a stint in england there...) and now reside in switzerland.

We're coming for 2.5 weeks to scotland this summer for our main hols and would like to do a trip, thinking campervan (hiring one) and b&b or hotel as suits.. arriving in edinburgh.

Little one is 4 and keen as mustard to do/see outdoor stuff. Wife is swiss, and has seen with me skye (1 week) and a general 1 week rapid tour of the rest..

we'd like to see maybe some other areas - are there any isles that you'd recommend a visit? Any must does with kids in tow?

We're outdoorsy, but wont have bikes with us.. We're not expecting good weather and will be properly equipped for wet weather.

Thanks all in advance for any ideas.

Aviemore for a a good few days - so much walking, hire bikes, float down the Spey...

I am partial to the Argour / Morven / Knoydart west chunk of coast. So wild and out there, so much history, so close to nature. Lots of walking, great beaches and great hidden lochs and forests.

Not been (since a teen) the the outer isles or Northern Isles ever.

We based ourselves in Oban last summer for two weeks. Did loads despite the bloody awful weather (was very unusual apparently). Got up to Loch Ness, over to Mull. Train up to Mallaig. Would love to go back and go higher up. However there's a ban in place in the house after last year.....

We flew from Bristol to Inverness and hired a camper van from
www.highlandcampervans.com

Brilliant holiday, on the West coast, Ullapool, Applecross Malaig, all lovely.
Mull is also nice, different holiday for us, Crofters cottage after we had kids.

Highland Campervans were great, close to the airport, collected from the airport taken to their HQ. offloaded all the kit into the van left luggage with them, including bike bags. The supermarket shop had already arrived and they had put it all in the van for us. so we were of on our adventures in no time at all.
Look at the Cool Camping book or website for some great spots to camp.

Definitely try and get out to the Hebrides for a few days, it's like nowhere else.

Say clear of the West Coast.

Whilst it as be stunningly beautiful on good days, it's unfortunate that good days are infrequent.

The rain can and usually is biblical.

When it nice the midges can ruin your day in a blink of an eye.

I worked near lochgilphead / oban for over 12 months last year. It's an area I never want to go back to.

Ullapool was nice, the scenery is stunning. The weather wasn't in the same league asinine Lochgilphead. On the road to Ullapool, watch for deer, they will wipe you out.

For info, I spent the last few years in Scotland building wind farms and hydros.

If it were my holiday, I'd go to Peebles.

Coolhandluke, yes midges can be a mare. We were there at the end of September and it was fine. I have been to Mallaig in the summer and the little critters were tiresome...

Yep avoid West coast. Nothing to see here. Best appreciated from the water though.
